#23 SOFTBALL CLAIMS THIRD STRAIGHT NE-10 REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP WITH SWEEP AT SAINT ANSELM, 9-1, 6-3

Manchester, N.H. - Senior Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) went 3-for-6 with two runs batted in and two runs scored to lead 23rd-ranked Le Moyne College to a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader sweep at Saint Anselm on Sunday afternoon at South Athletic Field. The Dolphins, who clinched their third straight Northeast-10 regular season championship with the two victories, won game one, 9-1, in five innings and topped the Hawks, 6-3, in game two.

The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the first game with two runs in the second inning without recording a hit. Senior designated player Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and freshman shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) each walked around a sac bunt to start the second. Following a foul out, sophomore catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) reached on an error by the center field to allow Farrelly and Shea to come around and score.

Le Moyne, which has won six of the last seven NE-10 regular season championships, added five runs on six hits in the third inning. Following a pair of outs to being the inning, junior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) singled to left and came in to score on a double to right center by Farrelly. Junior left fielder Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) then singled to center to knock in Farrelly, before scoring on a double to left center by Shea. O'Neill capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run homer to right field to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead.

The Dolphins posted their final runs of the contest in the fourth inning on three hits. Two-time reigning Northeast-10 freshman of the week Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) opened the frame with a single and moved to third following a single by junior center fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and a walk by Farrelly. After a pop out, Shea singled up the middle to plate Cashel and VanGorder.

The Hawks scratched across one run in the bottom of the fifth to deliver the final score. Saint Anselm loaded the bases with one out on singles by Liz Trafton, Julie Beaudry and Brittany Birch. Katherine Theodorou then reached on a fielder's choice as Trafton scored on an error.

Sophomore hurler Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) picked up her 15th victory of the season to match Farrelly for the team lead. She struck out seven batters in four innings, while allowing just two hits. Freshman Brenna Klein (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) worked the fifth inning for the Dolphins. The freshman tandem of Cashel and Shea each posted two hits.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored six runs in the opening two innings. Cashel led off the game by reaching on an error, stole second and scored on a single through the left side by VanGorder. In the second, Le Moyne scored five times on four hits and three errors after the first two batters were retired. O'Neill kept the inning alive as she reached on an error. After sophomore right fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) singled to left field, freshman first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) reached base on an error by the second baseman to allow O'Neill and Daum to score. Cashel then tripled to right field to drive in Ford, while VanGorder followed with a single to left to knock in Cashel.
