Dayton, Ohio - Rylan Ostrosky allowed just one run on four hits over six innings to lead Wright State to an 8-6 win over Le Moyne College in non-conference baseball action on Sunday morning at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Raiders jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Dolphins in the opening four innings of the game. With one out in the first, R.J. Gundolff singled down the left field line. Jeff Mercer followed with a triple down the left field line to drive in Gundolff. In the third inning, the Raiders plated a pair of runs on two hits. Mercer drew a two-out walk and scored on a double to right field by Casey McGrew. Quentin Cate followed with a single to knock in McGrew, but was thrown out trying to move to second to end the inning.
Wright State went ahead 5-0 with two runs on three hits and an error in the fourth. Garrett Gray opened the inning with a double to left center. On Kory Twede's sacrifice bunt attempt, the ball was thrown away to allow Gray to score. Following a ground out, a single and a Le Moyne pitching change, Ryan Ashe registered a bunt single to drive in Twede.
The Dolphins broke through with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Freshman right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled through the right side and senior second baseman Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./St. Dominic's) reached on a fielding error to open the fifth. After a wild pitch moved each runner up a base, junior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) singled through the right side to plate Botsford. In the seventh, junior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and classmate Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each singled to right field with one out. Freshman designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) laid a bunt single down the first base line to drive in Paino.
The Raiders answered back with two runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to extend their lead. Ashe walked and Mercer singled around a foul out to begin the seventh. McGrew then reached on a fielder's choice to knock in Ashe from second base. Following a Le Moyne pitching change and a hit batsman, Cate stole second and McGrew scored by stealing home. In the eighth, Twede walked and moved to second on a sac bunt. Twede then came around to score as Gerald Ogrinc reached on a fielding error.
The Dolphins rallied for four runs on five hits in the ninth inning, but were unable to tally the equalizer. Sophomore third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) and Paino doubled to open the frame. Brown then grounded out to shortstop to plate Marra. Ciraco picked up his second RBI of the afternoon with a single down the left field line to drive in Paino. After a single by Botsford, an out and a walk to Edmondson, senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) singled to right field to knock in Ciraco and Murphy. Michael Schum was able to induce a groundout to end the game.
Sophomore southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five runs (four earned) in three and one-third innings pitched. Botsford, Nandin, Marra, Paino and Ciraco each recorded two hits in the contest.
Le Moyne (8-16) returns to action on Tuesday at St. Bonaventure for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
