SYRACUSE, NY – Sophomore Cory Nelson (Manlius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) tossed a seven-inning no-hitter in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. It marked the sixth time in program history a Dolphin has pitched an individual no-hitter. Le Moyne moves to .500 (20-20) on the season topping the Leopards 7-5 in game one and blanking Lafayette 3-0 in the nightcap.
In earning his fifth victory of the season, Nelson worked around three walks and struck out seven on the day. Support for Nelson came in the bottom of the third as Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, NY / CNS) drove in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to right to plate Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollow, NY / St. Dominic's). The Dolphins added one more in the following inning as Matt Marra (Brewerton, NY / Central Square) touched home on a wild pitch. A solo blast off the scoreboard in the sixth by battery mate Chris Haynes (Manlius, NY / Fayetteville-Manlius) capped the Dolphin attack.
In game one, Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, MA / Framingham) pitched eight strong innings to improve his record to 5-2 on the season. The sophomore right-hander allowed seven hits, two earned runs and struck out three on the afternoon.
The Leopards got on the board early plating a run in the bottom of the first on a pair of doubles. A.J. Pisarri got Lafayette going with a two-bagger down the right field line. Shortstop Daniel Bierce drove a delivery from Tardiff off the top of the right field wall to plate Pisarri for the 1-0 lead. The Dolphins got out of the inning by cutting down Bierce at home from a throw from right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, NY / Baldwinsville).
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, junior Rich Brown (Vestal, NY / Vestal) put the Dolphins on the board with a two-run home run to right center giving the 'Phins a 2-1 advantage. A lead-off home run by catcher A.J. Miller in the top of the fifth tied the game at 2-2.
Le Moyne responded to regain the lead in the bottom half of the fifth. Nandin led off with a walk and after a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, NY / Johnson City) to give Le Moyne runners at the corners, Marra drove in Nandin on a double to right field. Chris Haynes pushed across another run on an infield ground out to second and a fielding error on the pitcher on Sean Paino's (Wappinger Falls, NY / Roy C. Ketcham) safety squeeze attempt plated Marra for a 5-2 lead.
In the sixth, the Botsford lead off double off right center field wall and moved to third on a bunt single by Nandin. Edmondson pushed across Le Moyne's sixth run on a double to centerfield.
Botsford led off the eighth with his second double to right center and moved to third on a stolen base. With one out, Matt Nandin delivered an RBI single to right to push the Dolphin lead to 7-2.
Lafayette's rally in the ninth was extinguished by freshman reliever Mark Kuzma as the lefty recorded the final out of the game to earn his first career save.
