Cary, N.C. - Freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a run batted in to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 6-2 come-from-behind win over Wright State on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader on the second day of the USA Baseball Complex Classic at the USA Baseball Complex. The Raiders defeated the Dolphins, 6-1, in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Wright State opened the scoring with one run without getting a hit in the first inning. Casey McGrew reached on a fielder's choice with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error. Quentin Cate then reached on another throwing error, allowing McGrew to score from second.
The Raiders added their second and final run of the game in the third inning on a pair of hits. Aaron Fields singled up the middle with out and proceeded to steal second base. After a pop out, Cate doubled to left center to drive in Fields.
Le Moyne cut its deficit in half in the top of the fourth inning with one run on two hits. Wiley led off the frame with a double to right center. After a ground out by senior Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) pushed Wiley to third, senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Wiley.
The Dolphins completed their comeback with two runs on just one hit in the top of the eighth inning. Sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and Wiley walked to open the frame. After a wild pitch moved each runner up a base, Edmondson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a Wright State pitching change, Paino singled to center to knock in Botsford with the game-tying run. After a pair of strikeouts, sophomore first baseman Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) drew a walk to force in Wiley.
Le Moyne added three insurance runs on three hits in the ninth inning. Sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Botsford. Wiley then singled to left field to score Kalaka. Following a pitching change, Wiley stole second and Edmondson walked. After a double-steal attempt resulted in Edmondson being thrown out at second, Paino singled to right field to push Wiley across the plate. Sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) then singled through the left side to knock in Paino, who scored from second after advancing on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) picked up his first career win by tossing three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Lambe struck out three batters, while allowing just one hit. Junior southpaw Cory Nelson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered six strikeouts in six innings pitched, while allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Jordan Wolfe took the loss for the Raiders after not recording an out and walking Botsford and Wiley and hitting Edmondson. Max Friedman, who was a Junior College All-American last year after going 11-0 for NJCAA National Champion Parkland C.C., allowed just one run on eight hits over seven innings, while striking out four batters.
In the nightcap, Wright State broke through with one run on one hit in the second inning. Tristan Moore tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a ground out by Jake Hibberd.
The Raiders then scored twice in the fifth inning on three hits and an error. Gerald Ogrinc singled to right field and moved to second on a sac bunt. Justin Kopale then doubled to center field to drive in Ogrinc. Dan Marsh followed with a single through the left side to score Kopale.
Wright State added its final three runs on four hits in the sixth inning. McGrew singled up the middle to lead off the frame and moved to third two batters later on a double down the right field line by Moore. After a Le Moyne pitching change, McGrew scored on a wild pitch and Moore advanced to third. Hibberd then singled through the left side to drive in Moore. Following a pop out and a stolen base by Hibberd, Garrett Gray singled to right field to plate Hibberd.
The Dolphins got on the board in the ninth inning with one run on three hits. Freshman third baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and Botsford registered infield singles to start the inning. Following a pitching change and a strikeout, Edmondson singled up the middle to scored Speicher.
Freshman righty Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Ontario/Neil McNeil Catholic) suffered the loss for the Dolphins. Werniuk, a 20th round pick by the Texas Rangers in the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft, yielded five runs on eight hits over five and one-third innings pitched. Michael Meintel earned the win for Wright State by tossing eight scoreless and striking out a pair of batters, while allowing just three hits.
Le Moyne (2-1), which went 1-2 at Wright State last year, wraps up play at the USA Baseball Complex Classic on Sunday morning against the University of Illinois at Chicago at 10:30 a.m.
