Lewisburg, Pa. – Senior centerfielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded five hits, scored four runs and drove in three runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Bucknell on Wednesday afternoon at Depew Field. The Dolphins took each game by a score of 10-3.
In the opener, each team scored two runs in the first inning. Sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled to left field with one out and came around to score on a double to left by sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square). After Marra was caught stealing third, senior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) walked and advanced to second on an errant pickoff attempt by the pitcher. Paino then reached on an error and sophomore designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) was walked to load the bases. Senior first baseman Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) was then hit by a pitch to force in Edmondson.
The Bison answered with a pair of runs on two hits and an error in their half of the frame. Ben Allen and Bob Donato singled to lead off the inning. B.J. LaRosa then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to allow Allen to score from second. Two batters later, Drew Constable registered a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Donato.
The Dolphins took control of the game with four runs in the second inning. Freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) singled, Botsford walked and Marra singled to load the bases. Edmondson then lifted a sac fly to center to knock in Wiley. Paino followed with a double to drive in Botsford and Marra before coming around to score on a double to left center by Ciraco.
Bucknell answered with one run in the bottom of the second on a single by Andrew Brouse to plate Allen, who singled with one out. The Dolphins got the run back in the third on a sac fly to right by Wiley to drive in sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), who was hit by a pitch to open the frame.
Le Moyne closed out the scoring in the game with three runs on two hits in the sixth inning. Botsford walked and stole second before moving to third on a ground out. After Edmondson was hit by a pitch, Paino knocked in Botsford with a bunt single. Ciraco then doubled to right center to plate Edmondson, while Brown followed with a sac fly to center to drive home Paino.
Sophomore righty Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) picked up the win for the Dolphins by allowing just three runs (one earned) on six hits over five innings, while striking out a pair of batters. Alex Cillo suffered the loss for the Bison after giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits in just one and two-thirds innings.
The Dolphins opened the nightcap with five runs over the first two innings. Wiley led off the game with a double to right center and scored two batters later on a ground out by Marra. In the second inning, Paino doubled and junior designated hitter Don Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood HS) singled to open the frame. Following an out, Paino scored on a ground out by freshman third baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury). Freshman catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) then singled to plate Schaaf. After Wiley singled and he and Stinson moved up a base on a wild pitch, Botsford singled to knock in Stinson and Wiley.
Le Moyne increased its lead to 9-0 with four runs on two hits and two errors in the fourth inning. Sophomore first baseman Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) was hit by a pitch, Speicher singled and Stinson singled to load the bases. Wiley then reached on an error to allow Lombardi to score. Botsford followed by drawing a walk to force in Speicher. After a Bucknell pitching change, Marra drove in Stinson with a sac fly and Wiley scored on a failed pickoff attempt of Botsford at first.
Bucknell scored three times over the fourth and fifth innings around a run by the Dolphins in the fifth. Constable singled up the middle in the fourth to drive in LaRosa, who walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on a bunt single by Brouse and a throwing error.
Le Moyne completed its scoring with a run on two hits in the fifth. Paino doubled to open the frame, moved to third on a single by Schaaf and scored on a double play. The Bison recorded two runs in the fifth on three hits. Kevin Drozin singled to left to lead off and advanced to second with one out on a wild pitch. After Ben Yoder doubled to move Drozin to third, LaRosa plated Drozin with a single. Yoder then scored on a sac fly by Brouse.
Junior southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) picked up his second win of the season after yielding just one run on two hits over four innings of work. Daniel Hart took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in one and two-thirds innings.
