Farmville, Va. – Junior Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and Cory Nelson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) tossed complete games to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to split of a doubleheader with Longwood on Saturday afternoon at Bolding Stadium. The Dolphins won the opener, 5-1, while the Lancers took the nightcap, 1-0, in seven innings.
The Dolphins scored twice on a pair of hits in the third inning for the only runs they would need. Sophomore third baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) singled down the right field line with one out and then sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) was hit by a pitch. Freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) followed with a double to right center to drive in Redmond. Sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) then grounded out to knock in Kalaka.
Le Moyne tacked on two runs on three hits in the fourth inning to double its lead. Senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled to right field with one away and moved to second on a ground out. After senior first baseman Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) walked, Redmond doubled to right center to plate Paino and Brown.
Longwood narrowed its deficit with a run on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the fourth. Brant Jones reached on an error and advanced to third as Casey Havers reached on a fielder's choice. Phil Cerreto then singled to right center to drive in Jones.
The Dolphins completed the game's scoring in the top of the eighth inning on a solo home run to left field by Wiley.
Tardiff, who recorded two of his six victories last season against Longwood, struck out seven batters while scattering seven hits in registering his first complete game of the season and the fifth of his career. Troy Dickman suffered the loss for the Lancers after allowing five runs on seven hits.
In the nightcap, Robbie Bailey drilled a solo home run to left field with two outs for the only run of the game. Nelson yielded just three hits while striking out four batters in the loss. Lance Harting earned his third win of the year with four strikeouts over five and one-third innings pitched. Mark Montgomery picked up his second save by tossing the final one and two-thirds innings.
Le Moyne (11-12), which won seven straight games over the Lancers dating back to the 2008 season before the loss in today's second game, closes out the three-game series at Longwood on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
