CORNELL USES LATE-INNING RALLIES TO SWEEP BASEBALL, 10-7, 6-5

Ithaca, N.Y. – Nate David singled in the winning run in the first game and Brian Billigen doubled home two runs in the second game to lead Cornell to a pair of come-from-behind wins over the Le Moyne College baseball team in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Big Red rallied for a 10-7 victory in the opener and a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

The Dolphins opened the first game with back-to-back home runs. Sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led off the game with a homer to left field, while freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) followed by drilling a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left. After senior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) tripled to center, sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Edmondson.

The Big Red answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brenton Peters reached on a bunt single, Mickey Brodsky was hit by a pitch and Frank Hager singled to center to load the bases. Brandon Lee then reached on a throwing error by the second baseman to allow Peters to score. Matt Langseth then recorded a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Brodsky.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs on four hits and a Cornell error in the third frame. Botsford reached on a lead-off single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman. After a sac bunt by Wiley, Edmondson singled up the middle to drive in Botsford from third. Two batters later, senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) doubled to right field to plate Edmondson.

Cornell scored one run in each of the next two innings to pull within 5-4. Brodsky opened the third with a double to center and scored two batters later on a single to right by Lee. In the fourth, Marshall Yanzick singled and Billigen was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After a sac bunt by Peters, Brodsky grounded out to Marra to knock in Yanzick.

The Dolphins pushed their lead back to three runs by scoring twice on two hits and an error in the top of the sixth inning. Paino doubled down the left field line to open the frame and came around to score on a single to right by redshirt freshman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). Following a walk and a fielder's choice, Botsford reached on a fielding error by the left fielder that allowed Mahoney to score.

The Big Red pushed ahead with six runs on five hits and one Le Moyne error in the bottom of the sixth. Peters singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. After Brodsky drew a walk and Le Moyne changed pitchers, Hager doubled to left field to drive in Peters. Anthony Irigoyen followed with a single to center to plate Brodsky and Hager. Following a walk to Langseth, David singled to left to give Cornell the lead by driving in Irigoyen. Two batters later, Langseth scored and David advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ryan Michael closed out the game's scoring by driving in David with a single to right field.

Redshirt sophomore Mike Anarumo (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) took the loss for the Dolphins after yielding four runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. Mike Carroll earned the win for the Big Red by pitching one inning, while David Rochefort tossed a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his third save.

In the nightcap, Edmondson homered to right center in the fourth inning for the first run of the game.

Cornell took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a grand slam to left field by Conor McCabe. Brodsky had reached on a hit by pitch and Hager walked with one out, while Langseth reached on a single.

Le Moyne began chipping away at its deficit with one run in the fifth inning. Sophomore Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mahoney then doubled to left center to plate Lombardi.

In the sixth inning, the Dolphins took a 5-4 lead on a three-run homer to left field by Marra. Wiley led off the inning with a single to left and Edmondson was hit by a pitch in front of Marra.

Cornell posted its second comeback of the day by scoring twice on two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. McCabe drew a walk to open the frame and was replaced on the basepaths by pinch-runner Spencer Souza. After Jerry Vitiello was hit by a pitch and Mike Lopez reached on a bunt single back to the pitcher, Billigen doubled to right center to plate Souza with the tying run and Vitiello with the winning run.

Senior southpaw Luke Nellis (Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batsman without recording an out. Rochefort earned the win after pitching a scoreless seventh innng.
