Niles, Ohio – Junior Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) tossed a complete game four-hitter and freshman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) registered four hits to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader split with Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at Eastwood Field. The Penguins held off a Le Moyne rally for an 8-6 win in the opening game, while the Dolphins posted a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Penguins scored all eight of their runs over the first three innings. Derek Carr opened the first inning with a single to second and later advanced to second on a throwing error. Two batters later, Tom Clayton singled to first base to moved Carr to third. Eric Marzec then flied out to center to drive in Carr.
In the second inning, Zac McFarland doubled to right center, C.J. Morris reached on a fielding error and Jeremy Banks walked to load the bases. After a groundout forced out McFarland at home, Jacke Healey walked to force in Morris.
Youngstown State extended its lead to 8-0 with six runs on six hits and an error in the third inning. Joe Iacobucci singled with one out, McFarland followed with a single and Anthony Porter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Morris then singled to right field to drive in Iacobucci and McFarland. Banks then singled through the right side to plate Porter. Carr and Healey delivered consecutive singles to knock in Morris and Banks. Clayton drove in Carr with the final run of the inning on a ground out to the first baseman.
Le Moyne began its rally with three runs on five hits in the seventh inning. Sophomore Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) opened the frame with a single to center and moved to second two batters later on a bunt single to third base by sophomore Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School). Sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) followed with a double to right field to plate Lombardi from second. Following an out, Wiley singled to left to knock in Ciraco and Wiley.
The Dolphins pulled within 8-6 in the eighth inning with three runs on two hits and an error. Freshman catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled to right to begin the inning. Lombardi was then walked by reliever Bill Turosky. Following a fly out, Ciraco drew a walk to load the bases. After Marzec took over on the mound and recorded a strikeout, sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to allow Stinson and Lombardi to score. Wiley then doubled to drive in Ciraco. Marzec got out of the inning by getting a strikeout.
Le Moyne had runners on second and third with one out in the ninth inning, but Marzec was able to strike out the final two batters he faced.
Junior southpaw Cory Nelson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits over six innings. Aaron Swenson improved to 6-0 on the season by scattering 10 hits over seven innings, while yielding four runs (three earned) and striking out five batters. Marzec earned his fifth save by striking out five batters around a hit and two walks.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins got on the board in the second inning with one run on one hit and one error. Senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) was hit by a pitch with one out and proceeded to steal second base. Redshirt freshman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) then singled to left field and advanced to third on a fielding error by the left fielder, allowing Paino to score.
The Dolphins doubled their lead in the third inning on three hits. Wiley singled to center with two outs and then stole second base. Senior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) followed with a single to right to plate Wiley.
Le Moyne extended its lead to six runs with two runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. Botsford led off the fifth by drawing a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Wiley. Two batters later, Marra reached on a throwing error by the third baseman that kept the inning alive and allowed Botsford to score. After Marra advanced to second on an error by the shortstop and moved to third on a wild pitch, Paino reached by drawing a walk. As Paino stole second, Marra stole home to give the Dolphins a 4-0 lead.
In the sixth, Lombardi led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham). Lombardi then scored as Botsford reached on a fielding error by the first baseman. Two batters later, Edmondson singled to center to score Botsford from third.
The Penguins spoiled Tardiff's bid for a shutout with a run on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Neil Schroth was hit by a pitch, Clayton singled to right and Banks singled to left to load the bases. McFarland then reached on a fielder's choice that drove in Schroth. Tardiff induced a groundout and a line out to get out of the inning.
Tardiff struck out four batters in his complete-game performance to improve his record to 4-3 on the season. Phil Klein took the loss for the Penguins after allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits in four and one-third innings.
Le Moyne (20-20), which has dropped six of its last eight games, closes out its three-game series with the Penguins on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
