Colchester, Vt. – Sophomore catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) went 6-for-6 with three runs batted in and two runs scored to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Saint Michael's in Northeast-10 Conference action on Monday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. The Dolphins took the opening game, 7-2, and posted a 12-7 victory in the nightcap.
After four scoreless innings, the Dolphins blew game one open with seven runs on nine hits in the fifth inning. Sophomore third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a single by senior Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal). Senior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) followed with a double to drive in Cashel and move VanGorder to third. Edmondson then flied out to left field to plate VanGorder. After senior Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) singled to knock in Schweikert and stole second, sophomore shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) singled to score Phillips and moved to second on the throw home. Two batters later, junior Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) singled home Shea, while freshman Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) moved to second base. After a run-scoring single by sophomore first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) and Cashel's second single of the inning, VanGorder doubled to knock in Ford.
Saint Michael's got on the board with two runs on four hits in the sixth inning. Katelyn Billings and Stephanie Frank singled to open the frame. Ellen Lussier then doubled to drive in Billings. Meghan Colitti followed with a single to plate Frank. Junior righty Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) induced a groundout and recorded a pair of strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Vanacore struck out 10 batters in registering her fifth win of the season, while yielding two runs on six hits. Frank took the loss for the Purple Knights after giving up seven runs on 13 hits over five innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored twice on four hits in the first inning. After Cashel doubled and VanGorder singled to open the game, Schweikert doubled to plate both runners, but was thrown out trying to reach third.
The Purple Knights cut their deficit in half by scoring once on two hits in the second inning. Kelly Losi led off with a double, but was thrown out at third as Heather French reached base. Two batters later, Carleen McLaughlin doubled to plate French.
Le Moyne extended its lead to 4-1 in the third on a two-run homer by Phillips that also scored Edmondson, who reached on a two-out single. In the bottom of the frame, Saint Michael's got one run back on a homer by Frank.
The Dolphins took a 10-2 lead with six runs on six hits and three Saint Michael's errors in the fifth. Cashel doubled and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder to start the inning. After VanGorder reached on a fielder's choice, Schweikert singled to plate Cashel. Following a pitching change by the Purple Knights, Edmondson doubled home VanGorder and Schweikert. After Phillips singled and advanced to second on the throw, Shea plated Edmondson and Phillips with a single. Two batters later, sophomore Kate Waltman (Alplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna) singled to knock in Shea.
Saint Michael's stayed alive by scoring once in the bottom of the inning. Frank and Lussier each singled to open the frame and moved up a base on a wild pitch. Colitti then reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Frank to score.
Le Moyne scored its final two runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Schweikert led off the frame with a solo homer. After Edmondson singled and was replaced by sophomore pinch-runner Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley), who then stole second, Phillips doubled to drive in Brown.
The Purple Knights closed within 12-7 with four runs on four hits in the sixth, but could not get any closer. Lindsay Bernard and McLaughlin singled to lead off the frame. After a fly out, pinch-runner Tori Buck and Bernard moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Frank then doubled to plate Bernard and Buck. After Frank moved to third on a passed ball, she scored on a wild pitch as Lussier walked. Following a wild pitch and a passed ball the advanced Lussier to third, Colitti tripled to knock in Lussier. Reliever Katelyn Fowler (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy Creek) got the first batter she faced to fly out, while Colitti was thrown out at home by Kermidas to get out of the inning.
Phillips earned her first career victory in the circle after striking out two batters over five and one-third innings. Kelly Egan took the loss after allowing nine runs on 12 hits in two stints in the circle totaling six innings.
Le Moyne (12-14, NE-10 10-6), which has won eight of its last 10 games, returns to action on Wednesday at Southern Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m.
