Syracuse, N.Y. – Bandar Kayali picked up a win at first singles and teamed for a victory at first doubles to lead fifth-seeded Adelphi to a 5-1 upset of the fourth-seeded Le Moyne College men's tennis team on Tuesday afternoon in the Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinals at Nottingham High School.
Kayali teamed with Anton Voynov to record an 8-2 win at first doubles over sophomores Daniel Sullivan (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and Brian Rice (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill). In singles action, Kayali downed Sullivan by a score of 7-5, 6-0.
Joseph Carbone also registered wins in singles and doubles action. At third singles, Carbone defeated James Shelp (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Sutherland) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. In third doubles play, Carbone and Adrish Tewarie posted an 8-2 victory over sophomores Joseph Persia (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and Michael Green (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). Leonard Bruno picked up Adelphi's fifth point with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in sixth singles.
The Dolphins got their lone point at second doubles as Shelp and classmate Andrew Gleason (Gorham, Maine/Cheverus) knocked off Bruno and Gaetan Georges 8-6. Voynov and Tewarie were leading Rice and Gleason, respectively, when Adelphi clinched the match.
Le Moyne drops to 9-10 with the loss, while Adelphi improves to 9-6 and will take on top-seeded Bentley in the conference semifinals.
