LAMBE AND WERNIUK PITCH BASEBALL TO SWEEP OF BUFFALO, 2-0, 2-1

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) threw a complete-game four-hitter in game one and freshman Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Ontario/Neil McNeil Catholic) allowed just two hits in five innings in the nightcap to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of Buffalo on Wednesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins won the opener 2-0 and defeated the Bulls 2-1 in the nightcap.

In the opening, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need on two hits in the second inning. Sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a groundout. Senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) then singled up the middle to drive in Marra, but was thrown out trying to advance to second base.

In the fifth inning, sophomore designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) was hit by a pitch to open the frame. After redshirt freshman third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) reached on a throwing error by the catcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt and sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) reached on a bunt single back to the pitcher to load the bases, freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) drew a two-out walk to force in Ciraco.

After the first two batters of the seventh inning reached base for the Bulls, Lambe got a groundout, a strikeout and a fly out to end the game. Lambe, who tied his career high by going all seven innings, struck out six batters in recording his first career shutout.       Jeff Thompson took the loss for Buffalo after yielding two runs on just four hits in six innings of work, while striking out five batters.

In game two, Le Moyne scored its only two runs in the third inning. Sophomore first baseman Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) drew a walk to lead off the frame. After a pair of fly outs, senior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) laced a double just inside first base to move Lombardi to third. Marra then singled to right field to plate Lombardi and Edmondson.

The Bulls scored once in the sixth inning, but could not plate the tying run. David Neff walked to open the inning and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Following a groundout that moved Neff to second, Bobby Pizzuto singled to left field to drive in Neff. Pizzuto was then thrown out trying to steal third before freshman Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) struck out Brad Cochrane to get out of the inning.

Werniuk struck out four batters in registering his third win of the season. Cannon struck out two batters, while allowing just a hit, in two innings to earn his first save. Mike Klaus suffered the loss after giving up two runs on six hits in five and two-thirds innings.

Le Moyne (24-23), which won consecutive games for the first time in a span of 15 games, returns to the diamond on Friday at #4 Florida State at 6:00 p.m.
