MAHONEY LEADS BASEBALL TO SWEEP OF DOUBLEHEADER AT ST. BONAVENTURE, 9-2, 9-5

St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman designated hitter/third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had four hits, including two home runs, three runs batted in and scored three times to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of St. Bonaventure on Tuesday afternoon at Fred Handler Park. The Dolphins won the opener, 9-2, and defeated the Bonnies, 9-5, in the nightcap.

The Dolphins opened the scoring in game one with a run on two hits in the third inning. Sophomore third baseman Vince Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) singled with one out and moved to third on a single to right by freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi). After Wiley stole second, sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C. W. Baker) drove in Redmond with a ground out.

Le Moyne added three runs on three hits and a St. Bonaventure error in the fifth inning. Mahoney led off the frame with a home run. Following a pair of outs and Botsford reaching on an error, Edmondson blasted a two-run homer to give the Dolphins a 4-0 lead. With the two runs batted in, Edmondson becomes the program's RBI leader, eclipsing the previous record of 154 held by Chuck Kulle '93.

The Dolphins increased their lead to 9-0 with five runs on four hits in the seventh inning. After Botsford walked and stole second and Edmondson was intentionally walked with two outs, sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) singled down the left field line to drive in Botsford. Senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed with a single through the left side to plate Edmondson. Following a walk to freshman catcher/first baseman Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) to load the bases, sophomore first baseman Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) singled to knock in Marra and Paino. Mahoney completed the scoring with a double to score Stinson.

St. Bonaventure scored twice on two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Derek Speaker singled through the right side with two outs to drive in Austin Ingraham, who walked with one out. After Speaker stole second and advanced to third, Nick Cunliffe singled to plate Speaker.

Freshman righty Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Ontario/Neil McNeil Catholic) recorded his second career victory by tossing five and one-third scoreless innings, while striking out five batters and scattering five hits. Robert Nalepa suffered the loss after giving up nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in six and two-thirds innings.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck for three runs on four hits in the second inning. Mahoney doubled down the left field line with two outs and came around to score on a single to center by Botsford. Sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) then doubled to left field to plate Botsford. Following a walk to Wiley, Marra singled through the right side to drive in Kalaka.

In the third frame, Paino led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Stinson and scored on a sac bunt by Paino.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 7-0 with three runs on three hits in the fourth inning. Botsford reached on a bunt single to open the inning, moved to second on a sac bunt by Kalaka and then stole third. After Wiley walked and stole second, Botsford scored on a sac fly to center by Marra. Edmondson then connected on his fifth homer in the last six games to cap the inning's scoring.

After Mahoney homered in the fifth inning to increase the Le Moyne lead to eight runs, the Bonnies scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame. Pinch-hitters Eric Jutca and Cunliffe opened the inning with singles. After a ground out moved each runner up a base, Jutca scored on a ground out by Billy Urban. Jesse Bosnik then hit a two-run homer to right field.

The Dolphins got one run back in the top of the seventh on a lead-off home run to left field by freshman pinch-hitter Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico), the first of his career.

St. Bonaventure capped the scoring in the doubleheader with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Michael Grieco walked and Cunliffe reached on a bunt single to open the frame. After a ground out, Urban singled through the left side to plate Grieco. Two batters later, Brad Steinbach recorded a bunt single to drive in Cunliffe.

Junior southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) pitched four scoreless frames to record his third win of the season. Eddie Gray took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in four innings.

Le Moyne (18-14), which has won seven of its last nine games and 13 of its last 17, returns to action on Saturday for a home doubleheader against Longwood beginning at 12:00 p.m.
