Briarcliff, N.Y. – Sophomore shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) went 4-for-8, drove in three runs and scored three runs to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Pace on Wednesday afternoon at Pace Field. The Dolphins took the opener, 8-5, and completed the sweep with a 7-3 win in game two.
Sophomore catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) opened the second inning of game one by reaching on catcher's interference. Shea then singled and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher, allowing Edmondson to move to third base. Freshman designated player Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) followed by reaching on an error by the second baseman that allowed Edmondson to score.
The Dolphins doubled their lead in the third inning as sophomore third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) tripled to left center and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by senior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport).
After Pace evened the score in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run homer to left field by Lauren Bell, the Dolphins regained the lead with one run in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning. Schweikert singled to shortstop with two outs in the fifth and proceeded to steal second base. Senior left fielder Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) then singled to center to drive in Schweikert. In the sixth, Shea doubled to right center to open the frame and scored on a single up the middle by classmate Kate Waltman (Alplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna). Following a single down the left field line by junior center fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and a walk to sophomore pinch-hitter Amanda Mosich (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) to load the bases, senior right fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) drove in Waltman with a sac fly to right field. Cashel then singled through the left side to plate Daum.
Pace narrowed its deficit to 6-3 with a run-scoring single to center field by Kerri McLean to drive in Sarah Meleney, who doubled to open the sixth inning.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 8-3 with a pair of runs on three hits and an error in the seventh inning, but the Setters got the runs back in the bottom of the frame to deliver the final score. Kermidas doubled to center with two outs and came around to score as Daum reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Two batters later, VanGorder doubled to drive in Daum. For Pace in the seventh, Olivia Calcagnini doubled to left to open the frame. Following a ground out, Amanda Dague singled up the middle to plate Calcagnini from third. After a walk to Meleney and a wild pitch that allowed Dague and Meleney to move up a base, Larissa Porcelli drove in Dague with a ground out.
Sophomore Brenna Klein (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) earned her second win of the season by striking out three batters over seven innings, while allowing five runs. Samantha Poulsen took the loss in relief after giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in five innings.
The Dolphins scored three runs on three hits in the second inning of the nightcap. After Phillips and Edmondson each singled to left field, Shea blasted her first home run of the season to left field.
Le Moyne extended its lead to five runs by scoring twice on three hits in the fourth frame. Shea doubled to right with one out and scored on a double to center by Kermidas. Two batters later, sophomore first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) doubled to right to plate Kermidas.
After Phillips scored on an illegal pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Pace got on the board with a run on two hits in the bottom of the inning. Taliza Costanzo singled and stole second with two outs and scored on a single up the middle by Bell.
The Setters pulled within 6-3 on a two-run homer to left field by Calcagnini, but could not get any closer. Le Moyne closed out the game's scoring with a run in the seventh inning, without getting a hit. Phillips walked with one out and then stole second base. Following a ground out, Shea reached on a fielding error, allowing Phillips to score.
Klein registered her second victory of the day by scattering eight hits over seven innings, while striking out two batters and allowing three runs. Christina Rescigno took the loss after yielding five runs on six hits over four innings.
Le Moyne (6-12, NE-10 4-4), which won consecutive games for the first time this season, returns to action on Saturday for a home doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire at 3:00 p.m.
