EDMONDSON LEADS BASEBALL TO SWEEP OF LONG ISLAND, 12-1, 6-4

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Senior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) had five hits, drove in six runs, scored twice and stole a pair of bases to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Long Island on Friday afternoon at MCU Park. The Dolphins cruised to a 12-1 victory in the opener and rallied for a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

Long Island scored its only run of the opener in the first inning on one hit and one error. Tyler Jones struck out to open the frame, but reached first on a throwing error by the catcher. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Jones scored on a single to left by Gerard Tingos.

The Dolphins took the lead with four runs on four hits in the third inning. Sophomore designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) led off by drawing a walk, advanced to second on a sac bunt and came around to score on a single up the middle by sophomore right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). After a single to left by freshman second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi), Edmondson doubled to left center to drive in Botsford and Wiley. Two batters later, freshman first baseman/catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) doubled to knock in Edmondson.

After Ciraco gave the Dolphins a 5-1 lead with a solo home run down the left field line in the fourth inning, Le Moyne blew the game open with five runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Wiley led off with a double to right center and scored on a homer to center by Edmondson, the 44th of his career. The Dolphins then loaded the bases on infield singles by sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) and senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) around a walk by Stinson. Redshirt freshman third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) followed with a sac fly to center to plate Marra. Following a pitching change, an out and a walk to sophomore catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) to load the bases again, Stinson came in to score on a wild pitch. After a walk to Botsford, Wiley was hit by a pitch to force in Paino with the final run of the inning.

The Dolphins capped the scoring in the game by scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Marra walked to lead off the sixth, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a groundout. In the seventh, the Dolphins loaded the bases on singles by Ciraco and Wiley and a walk to Kalaka. Edmondson then drove in Ciraco with a sac fly to center field.

Junior righty Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) won his sixth game of the season by allowing just an unearned run on four hits in going the distance on the mound. Adam Sauter took the loss after giving up 10 runs on 11 hits over four and one-third innings. Wiley joined Edmondson in posting three hits in the contest, while Paino and Ciraco had two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, the Blackbirds jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings. They got on the board with one run on a hit and a Le Moyne error in the first inning. Tyler Jones drew a walk to open the frame and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Following a walk to Tingos, Drew Walsh singled to center to plate Jones.

In the second inning, Long Island loaded the bases with a two-out walk by Sam Sciamarelli, a single up the middle by Jones and a walk by Albert Faz. Tingos then doubled down the right field line to drive in all three base runners.

The Dolphins rallied with five runs on five hits and a Long Island error in the fourth inning. Stinson singled to right, Paino singled to center and Mahoney walked to load the bases with no outs. Ciraco then plated Stinson with a sac fly to left. After freshman first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to load the bases once again, Botsford singled up the middle to drive in Paino and Mahoney. Wiley then singled to the second baseman to knock in O'Connor, who had moved to third on a passed ball. Edmondson followed with a single to left center to drive in Botsford with the go-ahead run.

Le Moyne tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning on two hits. Paino led off with a single to center and advanced to third on a ground out. Ciraco followed with a sac fly to right to bring home Paino with the final run of the day.

Junior southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) earned his fourth win of the season by tossing four and one-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Redshirt sophomore lefty Mike Anarumo (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) earned his first career save by pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Justin Topa suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over four innings. Paino had three hits in the game, while Edmondson and Stinson each recorded a pair.

Le Moyne (28-25), which clinched a winning record for the 13th consecutive season with the victories, closes out the season on Saturday at Rider at 12:00 p.m.
