Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior guard Gabrielle Gibson scored 30 points to lead 22nd-ranked Assumption to an 85-67 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.
Senior center Emma Cronk (Parham, Ontario/Sydenham/Gardner-Webb/Binghamton) led the Dolphins on the afternoon with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 shooting from the foul line, while adding a team-best eight rebounds. Senior forward Katie Hart (Constantia, N.Y./Central Square/Canisius) and junior forward Emily Bayly (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) recorded 10 points apiece, while Bayly tallied seven rebounds. For the game, the Dolphins were perfect from the foul line, making all 17 of their attempts.
Gibson registered 19 of her career-high point total in 16 minutes of action in the second half after scoring 11 points in 11 minutes in the first half. Sabrina Siciliano registered a double-double on the day with 18 points and 13 rebounds. All-conference forward Kelly Meredith posted 17 points and seven rebounds, while guard Katy Howard directed the Greyhound offense with eight assists and was her team's fourth player in double-digits with 10 points.
After the Greyhounds scored nine straight points to take a 9-2 lead at the 16:50 mark of the opening half, the Dolphins rattled off 14 of the next 17 points to take their largest lead of the game with 12:14 remaining. Hart ignited the run with back-to-back baskets in the paint, while Bayly and sophomore guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) also added four points apiece and freshman guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) made a lay-up off a feed from Hart.
Following eight points from each team over the ensuing four minutes, the Greyhounds scored eight straight points at the beginning of a 26-6 run over a span of six and one-half minutes. Meredith led the charge with nine points, Gibson added eight and Howard hit back-to-back pull-up jumpers just outside the lane.
The Dolphins scored seven straight points in a span of 58 seconds to cut their deficit to single-digits, but Howard ended the scoring in the stanza with a jumper with 33 seconds left. In Le Moyne's 7-0 jaunt, freshman forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) and senior guard Morgan Rowland (Latham, N.Y./Shaker/Delaware State) hit a pair of free throws and McKnight drilled a three-pointer.
Assumption's lead stayed in double-figures throughout the second half. After a 5-0 burst by the Greyhounds over the opening 1:45 of the half, their lead bounced between 11 and 15 points over the next 12 minutes and 25 seconds. Siciliano recorded seven of Assumption's 20 points in the stretch, while Cronk had 11 of Le Moyne's 24 points.
Following a pair of free throws by Hart with 5:50 remaining in the contest, the Greyhounds recorded 12 of the next 16 points to take their largest lead of the game (20 points) with just over two minutes left. Gibson accounted for 10 of the points in the span with a conventional three-point play, a free throw and back-to-back three-pointers. Freshman forward Jocelyn Ford">Jocelyn Ford (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing) ended the scoring in the game with a baseline jumper on the left side of the court.
Le Moyne (1-3, 0-3 NE-10), which has dropped five straight games to the Greyhounds, returns to action on Wednesday against American International at 5:30 p.m.
