DOLPHINS PICK UP FIRST HOME VICTORY, 68-60, OVER AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomores Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) and Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) each registered double-doubles to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 68-60 win over American International on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.


Janson led the Dolphins with a season-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed a career-and game-high 12 rebounds for his first career double-double. Zapisek registered 11 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the campaign. Junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) tallied a season-best 11 points, including seven after intermission, dished out three assists and had two steals, while senior guard James Cormier (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy (N.H.)) recorded 10 points and five assists.

Sophomore guard Spencer Braithwaite led all scorers in the game with 19 points, 16 of which came after halftime. Sophomore guard Janek Schmidkunz came off the bench to score nine points via three three-pointers. Sophomore forward David Campbell, held 11 points under his season average of 16, led the Yellow Jackets with eight rebounds.

After Braithwaite opened the game with a three-pointer, the Dolphins scored the next 12 points to take control of the game. Tartt drove for a lay-up, Cormier converted three free throws, Tartt followed with two free throws, Janson scored in the paint and Zapisek capped the run with a three-pointer.

The Yellow Jackets scored eight of the next 12 points to get within 16-11, but that's as close as they would get the remainder of the game. Graduate student guard Sesoo Ikpah, who missed the previous two seasons with a heart condition, and redshirt freshman forward Braxton Gardner had lay-ups at the beginning of the stretch, Schmidkunz followed with a three-pointer and freshman guard Al-Shabazz Jabateh got AIC within five with 8:19 remaining in the half.

The Dolphins answered with a 14-2 run to extend their lead to 17 points with 3:41 left in the stanza. Le Moyne's 14 points came from six different scorers as Cormier and classmate Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) each hit three-pointers and junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata), sophomore forward Colin Sekal (Elkhart, Ind./Veritas Christian (N.C.)/Wagner), Zapisek and Janson each had lay-ups.

Sekal and Johnson each scored in the closing minutes of the half for the Dolphins, while Gardner hit a three-pointer and Ikpah made two free throws for the Yellow Jackets before the half ended with the Dolphins leading 34-18.

Le Moyne scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to open up a season-best 22-point lead with 17:21 remaining. Janson bookended the stretch with a dunk and jumper in the paint, while sophomore guard Nate Champion">Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) and Tartt each had jumpers.

American International responded with seven straight points to cut its deficit to 15, but the Dolphins countered to push their lead back to 21 with 14:10 left. Campbell had a lay-up to start the spurt for AIC with sophomore guard D.J. Gutridge following with a three-pointer and two free throws, while Sekal, Tartt and Champion each had lay-ups for Le Moyne.

After Champion's lay-up made the score 48-27 with 14:10 to go, the Yellow Jackets scored 16 of the game's next 18 points to cut Le Moyne's lead to seven points with 8:47 left. Braithwaite scored 12 of the points on four three-pointers, while sophomore forward Mark Ellis made a lay-up and Ikpah had two free throws.

Following back-and-forth action led to a 56-48 Le Moyne lead, the Dolphins netted seven straight points to regain a 15-point edge with 3:28 remaining. Tartt had a conventional three-point play, Janson hit two free throws and Zapisek had a reverse lay-up off a pass out of the paint by Tartt.

The Yellow Jackets scored 12 of the last 17 points to deliver the final score. Sophomore forward Brennen Cooper had seven of the points, Braithwaite made two free throws and Schmidkunz nailed a three-pointer to end the scoring, while the Dolphins got two free throws from Zapisek and Cormier and one free throw from Champion.

Le Moyne (3-2, 2-2 NE-10), which beat the Yellow Jackets at home for the first time since the 2008-09 season, returns to action on Saturday at New Haven at 1:30 p.m.
