Box Score Sparkill, N.Y. – Briana Sloper scored 19 points and grabbed a team-best five rebounds to lead St. Thomas Aquinas to a 64-38 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas Hall.
Sloper tallied 14 of her game-high point total in the first half, while pulling down all five of her rebounds. Slyvia Davis was the only other player in the game to score in double-digits with 15 points, 12 of which came in the opening half.
Senior center Emma Cronk (Parham, Ontario/Sydenham/Binghamton) led the Dolphins in scoring with seven points, which all came in the first half. Freshman Sadie Breen (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) led all players in the contest with eight second-half rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
The Lady Spartans led wire-to-wire in the contest after scoring the game's first nine points over the opening 3:46. Sloper contributed five of the nine points in the span, with three of them coming from the foul line.
The Dolphins scored nine of the next 12 points to get within three points, but could not get any closer. Freshman Jocelyn Ford (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing) got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with a jumper, Cronk followed with a pair of lay-ups and a three throw and senior forward Katie Hart (Constantia, N.Y./Central Square/Canisius) added two free throws.
After sophomore guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) converted a free throw with 7:11 left in the half to make the score 16-12 in favor of the Lady Spartans, St. Thomas Aquinas scored 12 straight points to pull away. Briana Cook ignited the run with a lay-up, Sloper nailed a three-pointer and Davis made two free throws, a three-pointer and a lay-up.
Following a free throw by junior forward Emily Bayly (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) to snap the run, the Lady Spartans closed out the final 2:38 of the half with seven of the last nine points to take a 35-15 lead at halftime. Davis had four of the points, while Sabrina Eggink scored the other three.
After the Dolphins got back-to-back baskets from freshman guard Alex Marple (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) and Bayly to make the score 40-19 with 17:46 remaining, St. Thomas Aquinas scored 15 straight points over the next six and one-half minutes to take its largest lead of the game. Riley Harrington led the push for the Lady Spartans with seven of the points, while four other players also scored in the streak.
Following a Natalie Catavero three-pointer to give the Lady Spartans a 60-24 advantage with 6:42 remaining, the Dolphins scored 14 of the game's final 18 points. Freshman Tessa Pucello">Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) began the run with a conventional three-point play for her first collegiate points, while Breen added two baskets.
Le Moyne (1-8) returns to action on December 30 for its first home non-conference game of the season against Mansfield at 5:30 p.m. The Dolphins have topped the Mounties each of the last two years at Mansfield's Comfort Inn Classic.
