SHEA LEADS SOFTBALL TO SWEEP OF SAINT ANSELM, 9-6, 7-3

Manchester, N.H. – Junior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) had five hits, five runs batted in, including the game-tying run, and scored the game-winning run in the opening game to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of Saint Anselm on Sunday afternoon at South Athletic Field. The Dolphins rallied for a 9-6 win in 10 innings in the first game of the Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader and posted a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the first game with three runs on three hits in the first inning. Left fielder Kayla McEachern led off with a double to left field and came around to score on a double to left by second baseman Kat Scafidi. Third baseman Nicole Boucher then doubled to left center to drive in Scafidi and knock Le Moyne starter Brenna Klein (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) out of the game without recording an out. Following a walk and two groundouts, Boucher scored on an illegal pitch.

The Dolphins got on the board in the third inning on a solo home run to left field by junior second baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek).

Saint Anselm extended its lead to 4-1 with a run on one hit and a Le Moyne error in the fourth inning. Center fielder Raylyn Glavin walked to open the frame, moved to second as Scafidi reached on an error by the second baseman and scored on a single to right field by Boucher.

Le Moyne cut its deficit to one with two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning. Junior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) started the rally with a two-out double down the left field line and advanced to third on a single to the shortstop by Cashel. Shea then doubled down the left field line to drive in Ford and Cashel.

The Hawks got a two-out, solo home run to left center by Scafidi in the sixth to push their lead to 5-3.

The Dolphins forced extra innings with a pair of runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Freshman Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) started the comeback with a one-out, single down the left field line. Two batters later, Cashel roped a single to left field. Shea then doubled to left center to drive in Weber and Cashel and knot the score at five apiece.

The Dolphins took their first lead of the game with four runs on five hits and two Saint Anselm errors in the 10th inning. Cashel was placed on second to begin the frame and came around to score on a single to left field. Junior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) then singled to center to knock in Shea from third. After sophomore center fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, she scored as freshman pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) reached on an error by the first baseman. Following singles by senior left fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and freshman pinch-hitter Kari Smith (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) to load the bases, Weber grounded out to the third baseman to plate Harrison with Le Moyne's final run.

The Hawks scored once in the bottom of the 10th, but could not get any closer. McEachern was placed on second to start the inning and came around to score on a fly out and a single to left center by Boucher.

Harrison earned the win in the circle after allowing just an unearned run on three hits over four and one-third innings pitched, while striking out seven. Shea had four of Le Moyne's 15 hits, while Cashel posted three hits and Harrison added a pair. Christina Boehn suffered the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits over two and two-thirds innings pitched.

Le Moyne scored its first run of game two on three hits in the second inning. Smith posted a one-out single to left center and moved to second on a single to the pitcher by Weber. Two batters later, Cashel singled to left side to drive in Smith.

The Dolphins doubled their lead with a run on two hits in the fourth inning. Weber singled to center with one out and scored two batters later on a double by Cashel.

Le Moyne increased its lead to five with three runs on three hits and an error by the Hawks in the fifth inning. Kermidas reached on an error by second baseman and Harrison followed with a single to left field. Daum then singled to left center to knock in Kermidas. Following an out, Weber singled to drive in Harrison and Daum.

The Dolphins added two runs on three hits in the seventh to cap their scoring. Weber doubled to right center with two outs and was then replaced by pinch-runner Hannah Gatley (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell). Ford then tripled to right center to plate Gatley. Cashel followed with a double down the left field line to score Ford.

The Hawks got three runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the seventh, but could not plate another run. Catcher Lauren Galavotti and right fielder Monique Gauthier opened the inning with back-to-back solo home runs to get Saint Anselm on the scoreboard. After a pair of outs, McEachern doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on an illegal pitch and scored on an error by the left fielder.

Harrison went the distance for the Dolphins to record her eighth complete game and ninth victory. She struck out a career-best 11, while allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. Weber led the Le Moyne's 16-hit attack with four hits, while Cashel had three and Edmondson and Daum had two apiece. Boehn took the loss after yielding two runs on nine hits over the opening four innings.
