Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Pace on Friday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 5-3, and took the nightcap, 9-1, in six innings.
The Dolphins scored all five of their runs in the opening game over the first three innings. The Dolphins scored twice in the first inning on three hits. With one out, junior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) doubled down the right field line. After Edmondson walked and a pop out, freshman designated player/pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) singled to right center to drive in Shea and Edmondson.
In the second, Le Moyne scored once on a pair of hits. Junior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) singled down the left field line with two outs and came around to score on a double to center by junior second baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek).
The Dolphins finished off the scoring with two runs on two hits in the third. After reaching on a fielder's choice, sophomore center fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) advanced to second on a walk by Harrison. Two batters later, freshman right fielder Hannah Gatley (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell) doubled to center to plate Kermidas and Harrison.
The Setters threatened in the seventh, but were only able to push across three runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error. Chelsea Shea was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a single to left by designated player Sarah Meleney. Following a groundout, shortstop Lana Buchbinder singled to center to drive in Shea. Center fielder Sabrina Gonzalez followed with a double down the left field line to knock in Meleney and Buchbinder. Freshman pitcher Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) then induced a groundout to end the game.
Weber recorded her first collegiate win after striking out three over seven innings, while yielding three runs on eight hits. Christina Rescigno took the loss for the Setters after allowing five runs on seven hits over three and one-third innings pitched.
Le Moyne scored the only runs it would need in the first inning of the nightcap on three hits. Cashel led off with an infield single and then stole second. After a groundout, Edmondson doubled to center to drive in Cashel from third. Two batters later, Kermidas doubled to left center to plate Edmondson from third.
In the second inning, the Dolphins added two runs on four hits. Gatley opened the frame by blasting her first career home run over the fence in center field. After a two groundouts, Cashel singled up the middle and went to third on a single to right by Shea. Edmondson then hit the ball back up the middle to drive in Cashel.
Le Moyne increased its lead to five with a run on two hits in the third inning. Senior left fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) singled through the left side with one out and proceeded to steal second base. Two batters later, Weber singled through the right side to score Daum.
The Dolphins scored twice on three hits in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. They loaded the bases with one out on singles by Shea and Edmondson and Harrison being hit by a pitch. Freshman pinch-hitter Kari Smith (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) then singled to left field to drive in Shea and Edmondson.
Pace got on the board with a run on two hits in the sixth inning. Buchbinder singled to left field with one away and came around to score on a double to right center by left fielder Nicole Schultheis with two outs.
The Dolphins forced the eight-run rule with two runs on two Pace errors in the bottom of the sixth. Edmondson walked to open the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman as Harrison reached on a fielder's choice. Following a strikeout and Harrison being retired at second as Daum reached base, Gatley walked to load the bases. Edmondson then raced home on a wild pitch, while Daum was able to score the game's final run on a throwing error by the catcher.
Harrison earned her 10th win of the year after striking out five over six innings, while allowing just three hits and one run. Chelsea Shea suffered the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits over the first three innings, while striking out a pair of batters.
Le Moyne (11-13, NE-10 9-3), which has won five straight games, returns to the diamond against Saint Michael's on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
