Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore center fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) had four hits, four runs scored and drove in the winning run in the eighth inning of the opener as the Le Moyne College softball team swept Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins rallied for a 5-4 win in eight innings in the opener and posted an 8-0 win in five innings in the nightcap.
The Dolphins took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the first game on three hits. Kermidas singled up the middle with one out and moved to third on a single up the middle by senior left fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn). Junior right fielder Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) then doubled to center field to drive in Kermidas and Daum.
Saint Michael's took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error. The Purple Knights loaded the bases with one out on a walk by Stephanie Frank, a hit batsman and a single through the left side by Meghan Colitti. First baseman Kate Condon then singled to right field to drive in Frank, while advancing to second on an error by the right fielder that allowed Bethany Falls to score. After catcher Kelly Losi was hit by a pitch to load the bases, third baseman Carleen McLaughlin walked to force in Colitti. Second baseman Lindsay Houston then drew a walk to force in Condon with the final run of the frame.
Le Moyne evened the score in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs on two hits and a Saint Michael's error. Junior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) singled up the middle with one out and advanced to second on a dropped throw by the second baseman as junior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) reached on a fielder's choice. After Shea and Edmondson moved up a base on a wild pitch, freshman pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) knocked in Shea with a groundout to the second baseman. Kermidas then singled through the right side to drive in Edmondson with the game-tying run.
The Dolphins got a run on three hits in the eighth inning for the victory. Shea singled to the left side with one out and advanced to second on a single by Harrison to center with two outs. Kermidas then singled up the middle to plate Shea with the winning run.
Harrison earned the win in relief for the Dolphins, tossing four and two-thirds scoreless innings, while striking out a pair of batters. Frank took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits over seven and two-thirds innings pitched.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the only runs they would need on three hits and a Saint Michael's error in the first inning. They loaded the bases with one out as Shea doubled to left, Edmondson walked and Kermidas walked. Shea was then able to score on a throwing error by the catcher on a pick-off attempt, while Edmondson and Kermidas each moved up a base. Harrison then singled to right center to drive home Edmondson and Kermidas.
Le Moyne added two runs on two hits and a Saint Michael's error in the third inning. Kermidas walked with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Harrison then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to knock in Kermidas. Daum followed with a double and came around to score on a single to center by freshman right fielder Hannah Gatley (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell).
The Dolphins delivered the final score with three solo home runs in a span of five pitches in the fourth inning. With two outs, Shea blasted a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left field for her first homer of the season. On a 1-1 pitch, Edmondson connected for her second homer of the year to straightaway center field. Kermidas capped the scoring by launching the first pitch she saw over the wall in right center for her first home run of the campaign.
Freshman pitcher Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) earned her second win in as many appearances by pitching four shutout innings, while striking out six and allowing just two hits. Lauren Mercik suffered the loss after yielding five runs on five hits over three innings.
Le Moyne (13-13, NE-10 11-3), which has won 13 straight games over the Purple Knights dating back to a 2-0 loss in the opening game of the 2005 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, returns to action on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. against Franklin Pierce.
