Syracuse, N.Y. – Corner outfielders Don Schaaf (Medford, N.Y./Longwood HS) and Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) each had four hits to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 8-4 win in the opening game of a doubleheader against Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Penguins took the seven-inning nightcap, 5-1.
The Dolphins got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) blasted his team-best fourth home run of the year over the fence in left field on a 2-1 pitch with one out.
Le Moyne added two runs on three hits and a Youngstown State error in the bottom of the third. After junior catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled through the left side with one out, junior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled through the right side and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Kalaka to score from third. Wiese then singled to left field to drive in Botsford.
The Dolphins increased their lead to four in the fourth on a one-out solo home run to left by sophomore first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico).
Youngstown State cut its deficit back to three with a run on one hit in the top of the fifth. Armani Johnson led off with a double down the right field line. After moving to third on a groundout, Johnson scored on a groundout by Padraic Williams.
Le Moyne got the run back on three hits in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Wiese singled through the right side and moved to second on a singled through the left side by junior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square). Following a walk, Mahoney reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Wiese.
The Penguins closed within 5-4 in the sixth with three runs on two hits. Joe Iacobucci drew a walk to open the inning and advanced to second on a single through the left side by Greg Dissinger. After a strikeout, Neil Schroth walked to load the bases. Craig Goubeaux then worked a walk after falling behind 0-2 to force in Iacobucci. Johnson was then hit on the foot by a pitch to plate Dissinger and knock Le Moyne starter Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) out of the game. Phil Lipari followed with a single to left center to knock in Schroth, but Goubeaux was thrown out at home by Botsford.
The Dolphins answered back with three runs of their own on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Schaaf led off with a single through the right side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Kalaka then doubled down the left field line to drive in Schaaf. After Kalaka advanced to third on a wild pitch and a Youngstown State pitching change, Botsford was hit by a pitch and proceeded to steal second base. Wiese then singled to left center to plate Kalaka and Botsford with the game's final runs.
Kuzma picked up his second victory of the year after striking out four batters over five and one-third innings pitched, while allowing four runs on four hits. Sophomore righty Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) earned his second career save after striking out six over the final three and two-thirds innings, while allowing just two hits. Youngstown State's Kevin McCulloh dropped to 1-5 on the year after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits over five and one-third innings.
In the nightcap, the Penguins scored three times on five hits in the third inning for the only runs they would need. Johnson led off with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt. Williams followed with a single up the middle and advanced to second as Johnson was thrown out at home. Iacobucci then singled down the left field line to drive in Williams. Following a single through the right side by Jeremy Banks and an error on the right fielder, Dissinger singled up the middle to plate Iacobucci from third. Dan Hurlimann then singled through the right side to drive in Banks with the final run of the inning.
Youngstown State added two runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error in the fifth inning. Iacobucci singled to right field with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a single up the middle by Banks. Dissinger followed with a single to left center to plate Iacobucci and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Hurlimann then reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases. Banks then scored his team's final run of the contest on a passed ball.
The Dolphins threatened with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but were only able to plate one run. Mahoney singled to right field with two outs and stole second. O'Connor then singled through the left side to drive in Mahoney. Schaaf followed with a double off the corner of third base to moved O'Connor to third, but Youngstown State starter was able to induce a groundout to end the game.
Redshirt sophomore Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (three earned) on 10 hits over four and one-third innings pitched, while striking out four. Klein improved to 3-3 after giving up just one run on five hits in the complete-game performance, while striking out six to win his third straight start.
Le Moyne (9-18), which had won four straight games for the first time since April 4-6, 2010 before the game two loss, takes on Youngstown State in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
