FLORIDA GULF COAST TAKES MIDDLE GAME OF SERIES, 10-1, OVER BASEBALL

Fort Myers, Fla. – Right-hander Ricky Knapp allowed just four hits over eight innings pitched to lead Florida Gulf Coast to a 10-1 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.

The Eagles scored the only two runs they would need on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the third inning. Left fielder Sean Dwyer doubled to left field to open the frame and moved to third as designated hitter Stephen Wickens reached on an error by the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Second baseman Mikel Alvarez then laid down a bunt single to drive in Dwyer. Following a sacrifice bunt and a walk to load the bases, Wickens scored from third as first baseman Zach Maxfield reached on a fielder's choice.

The Dolphins cut their deficit in half in the next inning on three hits. Freshman left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) led off with a double down the left field line. Following a single to right field by sophomore second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College), junior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) doubled to center to drive in Wiese. Knapp was then able to get a strikeout, a pop out and a groundout to get out of the jam.

Florida Gulf Coast got the run back in the bottom of the inning as center fielder Jake Foley doubled to right center with one out, stole third and scored on a two-out double to center by Wickens.

The Eagles blew the game open with five runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the fifth inning. Shortstop Brandon Bednar and third baseman Tim Roberson drew back-to-back walks to start the frame and knock Le Moyne starter Cory Nelson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) out of the game. Maxfield greeted sophomore righty Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Ontario/Neil McNeil Catholic) with a double down the right field line to drive in Bednar. Following a walk to catcher Mike Reeves to load the bases, Javi Sujo doubled down the right field line to plate Roberson and Maxfield. Two batters later, Dwyer lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to knock in Reeves. Sujo then scored from second as Wickens reached on an error by the second baseman.

Florida Gulf Coast closed out the scoring in the game with two runs on five hits in the eighth inning. With one out, Wickens and Alvarez recorded consecutive singles and each moved up a base on a passed ball. Bednar then singled up the middle to drive in Wickens, while Alvarez was thrown out at home by Botsford. Roberson followed with a single to right to knock in Bednar.

Knapp, the son of third-year Detroit Tigers pitching coach Rick Knapp and a 44th round pick by the Tigers in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, struck out a pair of hitters and faced just three batters over the minimum in picking up his fourth win of the season. Nelson took the loss for the Dolphins after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits over four-plus innings pitched, while striking out a pair.

Le Moyne (13-24) looks capture the rubber match on with the Eagles on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
