FLORIDA GULF COAST CLOSES OUT THREE-GAME SERIES WITH 19-2 WIN OVER BASEBALL

Fort Myers, Fla. – Second baseman Mikel Alvarez went 4-for-5 with five runs scored and two runs batted in to lead Florida Gulf Coast to a 19-2 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the first inning with a run on one hit. Alvarez led off with a single to the shortstop and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a walk and a wild pitch, Alvarez scored from third on a groundout to the shortstop by first baseman Zach Maxfield.

The Dolphins evened the score at one with a run on three hits in the top of the third inning. Junior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C. W. Baker) singled to left field with two outs and then stole second. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) followed with a single through the left side to drive in Botsford.

Florida Gulf Coast regained the lead in the bottom of the frame with one run on two hits. Alvarez walked and stole second to open the inning. Following a pair of outs, Maxfield singled to left field to knock in Alvarez.

Le Moyne tied the score again in the next inning on two hits. Sophomore designated hitter Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) was hit by a pitch to open the inning and advanced to third on a single to left center by sophomore first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico). Junior third baseman/pitcher Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) then singled through the left side to plate Stinson.

The Eagles took the lead for good with two runs on one hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catcher Robert Greene and Alvarez drew back-to-back walks with two outs and shortstop Brandon Bednar followed with a single through the left side to load the bases. Third baseman Tim Roberson then walked on four pitches to force in Greene. Maxfield was then hit by a pitch to plate Alvarez.

Florida Gulf Coast blew the game open with seven runs on six hits in the sixth inning. Roberson walked, Maxfield doubled down the left field and designated hitter Mike Reeves walked to load the bases. Right fielder Javi Sujo followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to right field to score Roberson. Center fielder Jake Foley then singled to center to drive in Maxfield. After a walk to load the bases again and a Le Moyne pitching change, catcher Andrew Valencia doubled down the left field line to plate Reeves, Foley and left fielder Sean Dwyer. Alvarez followed with a single to right to drive in Valencia. Following a single by Bednar, Roberson singled to left to knock in Alvarez with the final run of the inning.

The Eagles put the game away with eight runs on seven hits in the seventh frame. After a lead-off walk to pinch-hitter Tyler Anderson, Sujo blasted a home run over the fence in left field. FGCU then loaded the bases as Foley and Dwyer walked and Valencia was hit by a pitch. Following a pitching change, Alvarez and Bednar registered back-to-back singles to the left side to drive in Foley and Dwyer, respectively. Two batters later, Maxfield singled to right center to knock in Valencia and Alvarez. Anderson then singled to left field to drive in Bednar. After a single by Sujo to load the bases and a strikeout, Dwyer singled through the right side to plate Maxfield with the game's final run.

Junior Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) suffered the loss on the mound for the Dolphins after giving up four runs on six hits over four and two-thirds innings pitched, while striking out one. Mahoney and Marra led Le Moyne's 10-hit attack with three hits apiece. RJ Brown picked up the win out of the bullpen after striking out two batters in two and two-thirds scoreless innings. Bednar, Maxfield and Foley each posted three hits for the Eagles, while Sujo registered a pair of hits.

Le Moyne (13-25) returns to the diamond on Tuesday at Buffalo for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
