Springfield, Mass. – Freshman southpaw Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) struck out five in a complete-game four-hitter and singled twice and drove in a run to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a split of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Assumption on Monday afternoon at American International's Judy Groff Field. The Greyhounds rallied for a 3-1 win in the opener, while the Dolphins took the nightcap, 6-0.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first in the opening game on a pair of hits. Senior left fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) singled to center field with one out and advanced to second on a passed ball. Following a single up the middle by freshman right fielder Hannah Gatley (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell), junior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) grounded out to the third baseman to drive in Daum.
The Greyhounds took the lead with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, Tanya Robidoux doubled down the left field line and came in to score on a single through the left side by Melissa Jalbert. Following a walk by Lauren Medeiros, Marissa Palumbo doubled to left center to knock in Jalbert and Medeiros.
Freshman righty Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) took the loss in the circle for the Dolphins after giving up three runs on four hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched, while striking out four batters. Daum and junior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) each recorded a pair of hits in the contest for the Dolphins. Chelsea Durso picked up her fifth win of the year after allowing an unearned run on seven hits over seven innings.
Le Moyne struck for the only runs they would need on three hits and an Assumption error in the fourth inning of the nightcap. With two outs, sophomore center fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) doubled to center field. Weber then singled through the left side to drive in Kermidas and advanced to third on the throw home and an error by the catcher. Harrison followed with a single to left field to knock in Weber.
The Dolphins put the game out of reach with four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh inning. Harrison singled to left field with one out and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland). Daum then singled to right to move Batson to third and then stole second. Gatley followed with a single to left field to drive in Batson. Ford then singled to left to plate Daum. After a wild pitch moved Gatley and Ford up a base, junior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) grounded out to the second baseman to knock in Gatley. Ford scored the game's final run on a single to the shortstop by junior second baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek).
Harrison, named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week earlier Monday afternoon, registered her sixth complete game in seven starts this season and her fourth shutout of the year. Jennifer Lowrey suffered the loss after yielding six runs on nine hits over seven innings.
Le Moyne (6-12, NE-10 4-2), which went 3-1 in its road trip to Springfield, returns to action on Saturday at Southern New Hampshire at 12:00 p.m.
