Syracuse, N.Y. – Tristan Moore had three hits, including two of his team's seven home runs, and five runs batted in to lead Wright State to a 19-8 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Friday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with two runs on one hit and two Wright State errors in the bottom of the first inning. Junior shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a single up the middle by sophomore third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). As Mahoney stole second, the catcher tried to throw out Marra retreating to third base, but hit him with the ball, allowing Marra to score when the ball bounced towards second base. On the shortstop's throw home, it sailed over the catcher's head, allowing Mahoney to race in with the second run.
The Raiders bounced back with eight runs on four hits and two Le Moyne errors in the top of the second inning. With one out, Zach Tanner reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. As Kyle Mossbarger walked, Tanner advanced to third on a wild pitch. Following a stolen base by Mossbarger, Ryan Ashe singled to right center to drive in Tanner and Mossbarger. After Justin Kopale walked and Sam Picchiotti reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to load the bases, Dan Marsh singled through the right side to plate Ashe and Kopale. Following a single by Jake Hibberd to load the bases again, Moore blasted a 2-1 pitch over the fence in right center for his first home run of the season.
Wright State added six runs on six hits in the third inning. Following a strikeout and a walk to open the inning, Kopale smacked his first home run of the year over the wall in left field. Picchiotti launched the next pitch over the fence in left to knock Le Moyne starter Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) out of the game. After Marsh singled, Hibberd drilled a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left center for his second homer of the season. Moore followed by knocking a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right center.
The Dolphins responded with five runs on six hits and a Raider error in the bottom of the third. Sophomore left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) led off the frame with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a single up the middle by Marra. Two batters later, sophomore first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) drilled his team-best fifth homer of the season down the left field line. After back-to-back singles by senior right fielder Don Schaaf (Medford, N.Y./Longwood HS) and sophomore second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College), junior catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled to left center to drive in Schaaf. Redmond then came in to score on a wild pitch.
The Raiders added single runs in fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead. Kopale led off the fourth with a solo home run to right center. In the fifth, Mossbarger reached on a bunt single with two outs and advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman. Ashe then singled to right center to drive in Mossbarger.
Le Moyne got one run back in the bottom of the fifth. O'Connor walked and Stinson was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After a double play moved O'Connor to third, he scored on a wild pitch.
Wright State plated the game's final three runs in the eighth inning on two hits. Ashe was hit by a pitch to open the frame and moved to third on a double to left center by Kopale. Picchiotti then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in Ashe. Two batters later, Kopale scored from third on a wild pitch. Hibberd then ended the game's scoring with a solo home run to center field.
Kuzma took the loss for the Dolphins after surrendering 11 runs (four earned) on seven hits in two and one-third innings pitched, while striking out three. Taylor Braun got the win out of the bullpen for the Raiders after allowing one run on one hit over two innings.
