Syracuse, N.Y. – Designated hitter Kyle Mossbarger had four hits and three runs batted in to lead Wright State to a 16-9 come-from-behind win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.
The Raiders jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first five innings. After left fielder Dan Marsh drew a one-out walk, first baseman Jake Hibberd blasted a two-run homer to center field. In the second, third baseman Zach Tanner led off with a home run to left field. Wright State added two runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the third inning. Marsh opened the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a single up the middle by Hibberd. Following a strikeout and a groundout put runners on the corners, Tanner reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing Marsh to score. Mossbarger then singled through the right side to plate Davis from second.
Le Moyne responded with six runs on six hits in the fifth to take the lead. Sophomore second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) led off the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a fly ball. Junior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) then singled up the middle to drive in Redmond. Following a single through the left side by sophomore left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi), junior shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) singled through the left side to knock in Botsford and Wiley. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) then singled up the middle to plate Marra. The single gave Mahoney a hit in 11 straight games. Senior right fielder Don Schaaf (Medford, N.Y./Longwood HS) followed with a two-run homer over the fence in right center to knock Wright State starter Michael Woytek out of the game.
Wright State regained the lead with four runs on three hits and two Le Moyne errors in the top of the sixth. Ryan Ashe and Justin Kopale started the rally with back-to-back one-out singles. Sam Picchiotti then singled through the right side to drive in Ashe and advanced to second on the throw home. After a Le Moyne pitching change and a walk by Marsh to load the bases, Hibberd reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to knock in Kopale, while Picchiotti also scored on the play. Triston Moore then reached on a second fielding error by the shortstop to allow Marsh to score from second.
The Dolphins answered back with two runs on one hit and two errors in the bottom of the inning. Freshman designated hitter Brendan Maghini (Madison, Conn./The Gunnery School) opened the frame by reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop and moved to second on a single up the middle by Botsford. After a sac bunt by Wiley and a foul out, Maghini scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) then reached on a second throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Botsford to score.
The Raiders put the game away with four runs on four hits and two Le Moyne errors in the eighth inning. Marsh led off by reaching on an error by the second baseman and moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Moore doubled to center field to drive in Marsh. Catcher Corey Davis followed with a two-run homer to right center field to make the score 12-8. The Raiders then loaded the bases on singles by Tanner and Mossbarger and Ashe being hit by a pitch. After a strikeout, Tanner scored on a throwing error by the shortstop as Picchiotti reached on a fielder's choice.
Le Moyne capped its scoring with a run on one hit in the eighth inning. Botsford walked and moved to third on a doubled to right center by Wiley. After a Wright State pitching change and a fly out, O'Connor knocked in Botsford with a ground out.
Wright State closed out the game's scoring with three runs on two hits in the ninth inning. Moore started the scoring with a one-out solo home run to center field. Davis then reached on a passed ball as he struck out. Two batters later, Mossbarger blasted a two-run homer over the wall in center field.
Junior righty Ed Kohout (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence/Genesee C.C.) took the loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits over five and one-third innings, while striking out three. Botsford finished with three hits in the game, while Wiley, Marra, Schaaf and Redmond had two hits apiece. Michael Meintel earned the win after retiring one of the two batters he faced.
Le Moyne (9-21) and Wright State close out the three-game series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
