Box Score Lowell, Mass. – Three players scored at least 15 points as UMass Lowell registered an 80-51 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Costello Athletic Center.
Matt Welch recorded a game-high 19 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Dipanjot Singh posted a double-double with 18 points (12 in the second half) and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Scotty Tavares-Taylor tallied 15 points (11 in the first half), five rebounds and four assists.
Senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led the Dolphins with 15 points on five-of-eight shooting from behind the three-point line. Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) recorded 14 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
The opening six minutes and 28 seconds of the game featured eight lead changes. After Janson had a put-back lay-up to give the Dolphins a 12-9 lead at the 14:15 mark, the River Hawks rattled off 15 straight points in a span of 5:05 to take the lead for good. Five different players scored in the span, led by four points from Antonio Bivins.
The Dolphins got a dunk from Janson and a three-pointer from junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) to get within 24-17 with 7:35 left in the half, but the River Hawks scored 17 of the final 23 points in the stanza to take a 41-23 lead at the intermission. Six River Hawks accounted for the 17 points as Singh scored four and Robbie Walton, Tavares-Taylor and Akeem Williams each had three.
UMass Lowell, which has won all nine meetings between the teams in Lowell since joining the Northeast-10 prior to the 2000-01 season, opened the second half with 21 of the first 28 points to take its largest lead of the game. Welch led the charge with nine points, Kerry Weldon added five, Tavares-Taylor had four and Singh drilled a three-pointer.
Le Moyne scored seven consecutive points on a lay-up by Janson, a free throw and a lay-up from sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) and a lay-up from freshman forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy). Sophomore forward Brian Zapisek">Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and Singh traded three-pointers before Johnson followed a Welch lay-up with a three-pointer to get the Dolphins within 24 with 7:51 left, but that's as close as they would get.
The River Hawks scored 13 of the next 18 points to extend their lead back to 32 with 2:57 remaining. Singh nailed a pair of three pointers as four players scored in the four and one-half minute span. Romich capped the game's scoring with his first career three-pointer from the right corner.
Le Moyne (9-7, 5-7 NE-10), which had its three-game win streak snapped, returns to Ted Grant Court to face St. Anselm on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
