Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior forward Katie Hart (Constantia, N.Y./Central Square/Canisius) scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds in the second half to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 50-46 come-from-behind win over Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Hart finished the game with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the last seven games, while adding three steals. Senior guard Morgan Rowland (Latham, N.Y./Shaker/Delaware State) led all scorers in the game with 16 points, 12 in the first half, and recorded five steals. Junior forward Emily Bayly (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) came off the bench to score 10 points, seven of which came in the second half.
Briana Jones led the Hawks with a career-high 15 points. Curran Leighton tallied 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half, and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
After Tori Lehr scored the game's first basket for Saint Anselm, the Dolphins scored seven straight points and 14 of the next 19 points to open up their largest lead of the game. Senior center Emma Cronk (Parham, Ontario/Sydenham/Binghamton) got the Dolphins on the board, freshman guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./MacDowell) banked in a three-pointer from the top of the key and then Rowland scored nine consecutive points on a pair of fast-break lay-ups, a jumper and a three-pointer at the 13:46 mark.
Saint Anselm countered with a 12-5 run over the next 8:08 to knot the game at 19. Leighton hit a pair of three-pointers in the span, while Jones made three shots.
Rowland had a conventional three-point play to regain the lead for the Dolphins, but Jones made a lay-up and Leighton drilled a three-pointer with 2:17 left to give the lead to the Hawks. Hart evened the game at 24 with two free throws with 31 seconds remaining in the half, but Ashley Viselli converted two free throws with six seconds to go to end the scoring in the half and give her team a 26-24 advantage at the intermission.
Saint Anselm extended its lead to six, its largest of the game, 6:04 into the second half with nine of the first 14 points of the stanza. Four different players scored in the span for the Hawks, led by three from Kierra Moore.
After Vanessa D'Ambrosi converted a pair of free throws for a 37-31 Saint Anselm lead, Hart made lay-ups on three consecutive possessions to even the game with 11:12 remaining in the contest.
Moore made a free throw and Jones made a foul shot and a lay-up to give the Hawks a 41-37 lead with 7:14 left, but the Dolphins answered with nine straight points to take the lead for the first time in the second half. Bayly ignited the run with a lay-up after Rowland grabbed an offensive rebound, Rowland followed with a jumper off a pass from freshman guard Jocelyn Ford (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing), freshman guard Alex Marple">Alex Marple (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) drilled a three-pointer from the right corner for the lead off a feed from Ford and Hart followed with a lay-up off a pass from Ford for a 46-41 lead with 4:14 to go.
Lehr and Jones made back-to-back lay-ups to get within a point with 2:26 remaining, but Ford pushed Le Moyne's lead back to three with two free throws with 2:02 left. D'Ambrosi made a foul shot with 1:34 to go, but that would be Saint Anselm's final point. Ford ended the game's scoring with two foul shots with 28 seconds remaining.
Le Moyne (5-11, 3-10 NE-10), which beat the Hawks for the fifth time in the last six meetings, returns to action on Monday for its final non-conference game of the season against New York Tech at 5:00 p.m.
