Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Allen Harris scored 14 points in the second half as Saint Anselm rallied for a 69-62 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Harris led all players in the game with 20 points, while adding four rebounds. Jack Keough registered 13 points, a game-high 10 rebounds and four steals, while Roy Mabrey scored 12 points and dished out six assists. Dino Mallios handed out eight assists in the victory.
Senior guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led three Dolphins in double-digits with 17 points. Sophomore center Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) tallied 14 points, five rebounds and five blocks, while junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) came off the bench to score 10 points.
After the Hawks scored four of the game's first seven points, junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) and sophomore forward Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) nailed consecutive three-pointers for a 9-4 lead with 16:05 left in the first half.
Saint Anselm scored 10 of the next 14 points to take a 14-13 lead with 12:16 remaining, but the Dolphins scored nine straight points for a 22-14 advantage. Johnson started the run with a three-pointer, Tartt converted two free throws, sophomore guard Nate Champion">Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) made a jumper in the paint and Tartt followed with driving lay-up.
The Hawks pulled within three with 4:42 left after an 8-3 run over a span of 3:13. Harris made a lay-up, Mabrey connected on a jumper, Keough made a jumper and Dominic Borelli converted two free throws, while Le Moyne's three points came on a three-pointer by Tartt.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to double figures with seven straight points on a Mohamed three-pointer and two Janson lay-ups to make the score 32-22 with 2:03 remaining. Johnson exchanged two-point baskets with Harris and three-pointers with Mabrey to close out the scoring in the first half as the Dolphins took a 37-27 lead at halftime.
The Hawks rattled off the first 19 points of the second half to turn their 10-point deficit into a nine-point advantage 6:34 into the stanza. Six different players scored in the span as John Nielsen came off the bench to hit two three-pointers, Keough made two lay-ups, Mabrey nailed a three-pointer and James Morse, Mallios and Harris each had two points.
After Saint Anselm pushed its lead to 10 (52-42) on two free throws by Harris with 11:23 left, the Dolphins got three-pointers from Johnson and Zapisek in a span of 37 seconds to get within four points.
Following a lay-up by Janson that made the score 54-50 with 8:16 remaining, the Hawks got two free throws and a lay-up from Mabrey and two baskets by Harris to take their largest lead of the game with 6:21 left.
The Dolphins scored 12 of the next 14 points over a span of 5:03 to get within a basket with 1:18 remaining. Janson made a lay-up, Johnson drilled his fifth three-pointer of the game, Tartt made a lay-up, Janson had a put-back lay-up after two Borelli free throws, Tartt made a free throw and Janson capped the streak with a dunk to make the score 64-62.
Harris beat the shot clock on Saint Anselm's next possession to make it a two-possession game. After a Le Moyne miss, Keough made two free throws with 25 seconds left and made another with 10 seconds left after a Le Moyne turnover to end the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (9-8, 5-8 NE-10), which has lost back-to-back home games to the Hawks after winning four straight home meetings, returns to the court on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Bentley, which is tied for second in the Northeast-10 Conference standings.
