WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO PACE, 49-37, IN NORTHEAST-10 OPENER

Pleasantville, N.Y. – Brittany Shields recorded a double-double to lead Pace University to a 49-37 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Wednesday night in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams at the Goldstein Fitness Center.

Sophomore guard Alex Marple (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro) led the Dolphins in scoring for the second straight game with a career-high 14 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Senior guard Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered a game-best 10 rebounds.

Shields registered 15 points and pulled down a game high-tying 10 rebounds. Brianna Harris tallied 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.

The Setters opened the game with the first six points and seven of the first eight. Shields started the game's scoring, while Yuni Sher added a lay-up and a free throw and Harris made a lay-up.

Following almost eight minutes without a field goal, Marple registered consecutive baskets in the paint to get the Dolphins within 7-5 with 11:30 remaining in the half. Shields and Harris then traded baskets with freshmen forwards Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and Lauren Price (Humble, Texas/Atascocita) to make the score 11-9 in favor of the Setters with 7:33 remaining in the half.

After scoring only two points in a span of almost five minutes, Pace scored 14 of the half's final 15 points over the last 6:05 of the stanza. Margo Hackett ignited the run, while Sher followed with a jumper before sophomore forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) hit a free throw for the Dolphins. Shields then scored twice in the paint, while Jeane Drury and Hackett connected on three-pointers to give the Setters a 25-10 lead at halftime.

After Marple hit two free throws and Sher made a jumper to start the second half, the Dolphins tallied 13 of the next 17 points to pull within six points with 12:25 remaining in the game. Greer had a jumper and a put-back lay-up around a Marple lay-up to start the run. Brown then had a put-back lay-up, Lee recorded a conventional three-point play and Marple capped the streak with a lay-up.

Following four points from each team over the next 1:46, the Setters registered eight straight points to push their lead back to 14 points (43-29) with 7:24 remaining. Drury had a pair of jumpers, while Harris recorded a conventional three-point play and Shields made a free throw.

The teams then traded points to close out the game. Brown, junior guard Raven Short (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls), Greer and Marple each recorded two points for the Dolphins, while Harris, Sher and Shields had two points each for Pace.

Le Moyne (1-1, 0-1 NE-10), which split with Pace last year with each team winning on their home court, returns to action on Tuesday against The College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. The game will mark the ninth contest in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions, which is currently tied, 3-3.
