Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Kelly Meredith scored 27 points to lead Assumption to a 77-64 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gym.
Meredith, who pulled down a team-high six rebounds, tallied 14 of her game-best point total in the first half. Gabrielle Gibson registered 22 points in the game, including 12 after halftime.
Senior forward Katie Hart (Constantia, N.Y./Central Square/Canisius) led the Dolphins with a career-best 20 points, including 12 in the second half, and nine rebounds. Classmate Morgan Rowland (Latham, N.Y./Shaker/Delaware State) posted 19 points, 13 of which came in the second stanza. Sophomore guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) tallied eight points and dished out a game-best seven assists.
The teams went back-and-forth over the opening four minutes of action, resulting in a 10-9 Assumption advantage. Meredith tallied eight of Assumption's 10 points, while McKnight hit a jumper, Rowland buried a three-pointer and Hart scored twice in the paint.
Following Hart's second basket, the Greyhounds scored 10 straight points. Sabrina Siciliano made a jumper, Katy Howard nailed a three-pointer, Meredith and Katie Cullerot made lay-ups and Siciliano capped the spurt with a free throw for a 20-9 lead with 12:45 remaining in the half.
The Dolphins answered with 10 of the game's next 14 points to get within four with 10:09 to go, but that's as close as they would get. Rowland made a three-pointer, junior forward Emily Bayly (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) made a pair of free throws, Hart made a lay-up and then McKnight drilled a three-pointer.
The Greyhounds, who are receiving votes in the latest Division II coaches poll, responded with nine straight points and 18 of the next 22 points over a span of 5:21 to take control of the game. Six different players scored in the stretch, led by a pair of three-pointers by Gibson.
Le Moyne scored seven of the final 10 points of the half to go into the intermission trailing 44-30. McKnight knocked down a three-pointer, Hart made a lay-up and Bayly converted two free throws for the Dolphins, while Siciliano and Jamie Insel combined for three free throws for the Greyhounds.
After the teams exchanged baskets over the first 3:45 of the second half, leading to a 52-37 Assumption edge, the Dolphins scored seven of the next eight points to pull within nine with 14:53 left. Hart made a pair of lay-ups around a three-pointer from Rowland in the charge.
Assumption countered with seven straight points to regain its double-digit lead. Siciliano made a jumper, Meredith followed with a lay-up and Gibson capped the run with a three-pointer at the 13:04 mark.
The Dolphins got within 11 points on four occasions, the last of which came with 3:36 left (71-60), but could not get any closer. Rowland and Bayly each scored five of Le Moyne's 16 points with Hart adding four points, while Meredith had seven of Assumption's 11 points.
Assumption closed out the game with six of the final 10 points to deliver the final score. Gibson had a pair of lay-ups and Meredith added a lay-up, while Le Moyne got baskets from junior guard Torie Lee">Torie Lee (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and Hart.
Le Moyne (6-15, 3-14 NE-10), which has dropped six straight games to the Greyhounds, returns to action on Wednesday at American International at 5:30 p.m.
