Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Tim Beinert scored a career-high 33 points, including the game-winning basket with 1:48 remaining in overtime, as Assumption defeated the Le Moyne College men's basketball team 89-82 on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Laska Gym.
Sophomore guard Nate Champion (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) led the Dolphins with a career high-tying 23 points, including 17 in the second half, and handed out nine assists. Sophomores Brian Zapisek (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and Jim Janson (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) scored 14 points apiece, while Zapisek grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds for his team-leading sixth double-double of the year.
Beinert, who tallied 17 of his points in the opening half, recorded six of Assumption's 12 points in overtime. Kevin Donahue registered 22 points in the contest, 13 of which came after halftime, while Ronson Quick had 12 second-half points and a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench and Cory Schmidt posted 11 points. Ryan Rozsnaki dished out 14 assists, tying for the second-most in the country this season with Champion and three others.
After the teams exchanged points over the opening 3:13, leading to an 8-7 Le Moyne edge, the Dolphins scored nine of the next 11 points to open up the largest lead of the game with 13:27 remaining in the half. Zapisek started the push with a three-pointer, junior guard Derrek Tartt (Chicago, Ill./Oak Park Fenwick/UAlbany) made a lay-up and Champion followed with a pair of baskets.
Following a lay-up by freshman forward Ryan Romich (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable/Vermont Academy) that gave the Dolphins a 21-14 lead with 11:32 to go in the stanza, the Greyhounds scored 11 of the next 15 points to even the score at 25 at the 8:09 mark. Rozsnaki converted two free throws before Mike Auriemma, Donahue and Schmidt each nailed three-pointers.
After the teams posted ties at 28-apiece and 30-apiece over the next 3:37, they traded baskets over the last 3:23 as the Greyhounds took a 36-35 lead into the intermission. Junior guard Gamal Mohamed (North Plainfield, N.J./Immaculata) nailed a three-pointer to give the Dolphins a 33-30 edge, but Beinert followed with a pair of baskets for the lead. Champion put the Dolphins back in front with a jumper with 41 seconds to go, but Beinert converted a lay-up with nine seconds left for half's final points.
Following a three-pointer by Donahue to open the scoring in the second half, the Dolphins had a pair of 5-0 runs around a 5-0 spurt by the Greyhounds. In Le Moyne's first run, Janson hit two free throws and Champion buried a three-pointer, while Assumption countered with a jumper by Beinert and a conventional three-point play by Jimmy Zenevitch. Champion then made a jumper and Zapisek drilled a three-pointer to give the Dolphins a 45-44 edge with 15:31 remaining in regulation.
The teams then split the next 26 points, resulting in a 58-57 lead for Le Moyne with 9:16 remaining. Beinert and Quick each had five points in the span for the Greyhounds, while Champion had four points and Mohamed, Zapisek and senior guard James Cormier">James Cormier (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy (N.H.)) each had a three-pointer.
The Greyhounds scored seven of the next nine points to take a four point lead with 6:34 left to play. Auriemma buried a three-pointer, Quick made a lay-up and Donahue converted a pair of free throws.
Le Moyne answered with six of the next eight points to even the score for the sixth time at 66-all. Janson had a conventional three-point play and Mohamed followed with his third three-pointer of the game.
Assumption regained the lead on a conventional three-point play by Beinert and a lay-up by Quick around a jumper by Champion, but Cormier drilled a three-pointer with 2:54 remaining to tie the game at 71.
Champion followed with a lay-up with 1:36 left to put the Dolphins in front, but Donahue answered 14 seconds later with a go-ahead three-pointer. Champion regained the lead for his team with 47 seconds left with a lay-up before Quick tied the score at 75 by going 1-for-2 at the foul line with 33 seconds remaining. Donahue was fouled after grabbing the rebound on Quick's miss and proceeded to make the two free throws for a 77-75 edge with 32 seconds to go. After a Le Moyne timeout and a foul on Beinert, Champion forced overtime by sinking a jump shot in the paint with 6.1 left. Quick was unable to win the game for his team as his three-pointer just before the buzzer was off the mark.
Janson gave the Dolphins the first lead of the overtime session with a conventional three-point play at the 4:51 mark, but Donahue evened the score for the 10th time with a three-pointer 19 seconds later. Janson put his team back in front with 3:01 left by finishing off a pass from Champion, but that would mark Le Moyne's final points of the game. Beinert scored in the paint with 2:02 left to tie the score and gave Assumption the lead for good by hitting a jump shot with 1:48 to go after grabbing his own missed free throw.
After the Dolphins missed a three-pointer and a lay-up and turned the ball over, Schmidt buried a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to put the Greyhounds up by five. Beinert ended the scoring in the game by hitting two free throws with 18 seconds left.
Le Moyne (11-10, 7-10 NE-10), which falls to 1-5 in overtime games with the Greyhounds, returns to the hardwood on Wednesday at American International at 7:30 p.m.
