Box Score 2 Caldwell, N.J. – Kourtney Wilson and Hanna Walkinshaw each tossed a complete game to lead Caldwell to a doubleheader sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team on Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars won the first game, 5-1, and took the nightcap, 2-1.
The Cougars scored the only runs they would need in the first game on two hits in the first inning. After center fielder Kristen Knorr tripled to right center with one out and shortstop Megan Fryday reached on a fielder's choice, Knorr came in to score on a wild pitch. First baseman Briana Gaspich then blasted a home run to center field that also scored Fryday.
Caldwell extended its lead to four runs in the fourth with a run on one hit. Designated player Alyssa Calderon led off with a single to the right side and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Amy Leal. After third baseman Sara Zambelli reached on a fielder's choice and left fielder Katie Margiotta walked to load the bases, a wild pitch allowed Leal to score.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard with a run on three hits in the sixth inning. Senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) led off the frame with a double to center field and moved to third on a one-out single to left by junior designated player Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson). Senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with a single down the left field line to drive in Edmondson.
The Cougars capped the scoring in the contest with a run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Zambelli singled to left with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a single up the middle by Margiotta. Second baseman Dia Cascone then singled to the left side of the infield to drive in Zambelli.
Senior pitcher Brenna Klein (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) suffered the loss for the Dolphins after giving up four runs on five hits over four innings in the circle. Edmondson and Shea each accounted for two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Wilson registered two strikeouts in the eight-hit complete-game performance for the win.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck for a run on one hit and one Caldwell error in the first inning. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) reached on a three-base error by the right fielder with one out. Edmondson followed with a single up the middle to drive in Cashel.
Caldwell evened the game at one run apiece in the bottom of the frame. Cascone walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Knorr. Two batters later, Gaspich doubled down the right field line to plate Cascone.
The Cougars plated the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on just one hit. Designated player Marisa Tamez led off with a single up the middle and was replaced at first by Leal. After moving to second on a sac bunt and to third on a ground out, Leal scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore southpaw Sarah Harrison">Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) took the loss after giving up the two runs on four hits over six innings of work. Walkinshaw earned the victory after striking out four and yielding just an unearned run on six hits.
Le Moyne (4-12), which was swept by the Cougars for the second straight year, is back in action on Sunday at Molloy at 1:00 p.m.
