Box Score 2 Briarcliff, N.Y. – Sophomore southpaw Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) struck out seven batters in a two-hit shutout as the Le Moyne College softball team split a doubleheader at Pace on Wednesday afternoon at Pace Field. The Setters won the opener, 5-2, while the Dolphins registered a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.
Le Moyne opened the scoring in the first game with a run on two hits in the first inning. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) led off the game with a double to left field and came around to score on a double down the left field line by senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa).
The Setters evened the score in the bottom of the inning with a run on one hit and a Le Moyne error. Center fielder Sabrina Gonzalez doubled down the left field line to lead off the frame. Left fielder Nicole Schultheis then reached on an error by the third baseman that allowed Gonzalez to score.
The Dolphins regained the lead in the third as Cashel blasted a solo home run to start the inning.
Pace took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on three hits. Shortstop Jeane Drury walked with one out, Gonzalez hit a ground-rule double to left field and Schultheis followed with an infield single to load the bases. Catcher Lauren Bell then smacked a grand slam for a 5-2 Pace lead.
Sophomore Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled) took the loss for the Dolphins after giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits over four and one-third innings pitched. Caitlin McCann earned the win in relief for the Setters after tossing the final four innings and striking out three.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need on one hit and a Pace error in the third inning. Cashel singled to left with two outs and advanced to third on a fielding error by the left fielder. Cashel then scored on a wild pitch.
Le Moyne added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Shea led off the frame with a double to left field. Two batters later, junior designated player Fran Kiernan">Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) doubled to right field to knock in Shea.
Harrison picked up her seventh victory of the year with the complete-game performance, her 14th complete game of the season. At the plate, Harrison had two of Le Moyne's six hits. Kelly Fisher suffered the loss after tossing five and two-thirds innings, while yielding two runs (one earned) on six hits.
Le Moyne (7-19, 3-5 NE-10), which has split three straight conference doubleheaders, returns to action for its final non-conference games of the year on Friday at 3:00 p.m. against Georgian Court.
