SOFTBALL SPLITS HOME DOUBLEHEADER WITH UMASS LOWELL, 4-3, 3-4

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) went 5-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a split of a doubleheader with UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener, but fell 4-3 in the nightcap.

The River Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning of the first game with two runs on four hits. Left fielder Ally Greene reached on a bunt single with one out and moved to second on a single up the middle by second baseman Krista MacKenzie. After designated player Elyssa Boris singled to left to load the bases, catcher Lindsi Panarelli doubled to right field to drive in Greene and MacKenzie.

Le Moyne plated three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. Senior third baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) led off with a single through the left side and moved to second on a bunt single by Cashel. After Ford was retired at third as senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) reached on a fielder's choice and a fly out, junior designated player Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) doubled to right field to knock in Cashel and Shea. Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) followed with a singled through the right side to drive in Kiernan.

The Dolphins added a run on two hits in the fourth inning. Senior left fielder Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) singled to center with one out and came around to score on a two-single down the left field line by Cashel.

UMass Lowell scored once on two hits in the fifth inning, but left the tying run stranded at third base. MacKenzie doubled to left center with two outs and raced home on a singled through the right side by Boris, who ended up on third following an error by the right fielder.

Harrison earned her ninth win in the circle after striking out 10 batters over seven innings, while yielding three runs on eight hits. Cashel had three hits in the game, while Harrison added a pair. Courtney Lanfranchi took the loss for the River Hawks after giving up four runs on 10 hits over six innings.

In the nightcap, the River Hawks posted a pair of runs in the first inning again. Right fielder Ariana Darcy drew a walk on four pitches to open the game, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field. Boris then blasted a solo home run to center field.

The Dolphins cut their deficit in half with a run in the third inning as Cashel launched a solo home run to left field with one out.

The River Hawks got the run back in the next half inning on one hit and a Le Moyne error. Panarelli led off the frame by reaching on a dropped fly ball. Designated player Caelyn Ford then doubled to left center to drive in Panarelli.

Le Moyne evened the score at three apiece with two runs on five hits in the fifth inning. Shea singled up the middle with one out and moved to third on a single through the right side by senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City). Kiernan then singled through the left side to knock in Shea. After an out, freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) singled through the left side to drive in Edmondson with the tying run.

UMass Lowell scored the winning run in the top of the sixth inning on one hit. Panarelli drew a walk with one out and advanced to third on a single down the right field line by Caelyn Ford. Third baseman Ali Ferraro then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in pinch-runner Brianna Mahoney.

Harrison suffered the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings out of the bullpen, while striking out two. Capuano had three hits in the game, while Cashel and junior right fielder Demetra Kermidas">Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) each had two. Boris earned the win after giving up three runs on 11 hits over seven innings, while striking out two.

Le Moyne (10-20, 4-6 NE-10), which had its four-game win streak snapped, returns to the diamond on Sunday against Merrimack at 12:00 p.m.
