SOFTBALL SWEPT BY AUGUSTA STATE, 7-3, 3-0

Augusta, Ga. – Shortstop Kacee Camp scored four runs in the first game and Heather Hughes threw a three-hit shutout in the second game to lead Augusta State to a doubleheader sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team on Thursday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The Jaguars won the opener, 7-3, and took the nightcap, 3-0.

The Jaguars started the scoring in the opening game with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Camp led off the game with a single through the left side and moved to second on an infield single by left fielder Molly Walton. After an out moved each runner up a base, third baseman Jessica Thornton reached on a bunt single to drive in Camp. Walton then scored as Thornton stole second. Following a walk by second baseman Hannah Vaughn and a Le Moyne pitching change, Thornton scored from third as Vaughn stole second.

Augusta State added on a run in the second inning without needing a hit. Camp reached third on an error by the right field and scored two batters later on a passed ball.

Le Moyne pulled within a run on two hits and an Augusta State error in the top of the fourth inning. Senior second baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) led off with a walk. Following an out, sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) singled down the left field line and senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) drew a walk to load the bases. Senior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) was then walked to plate Cashel and force an Augusta State pitching change. Junior third baseman Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) greeted new pitcher, Heather Sexton, with a single up the middle to drive in Harrison and Shea. Sexton got out of the jam by striking out back-to-back batters.

The Jaguars got two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning as center fielder Kristen Jones blasted a two-run homer to left center that also scored Camp, who singled to open the inning.

Augusta State closed out the scoring in the game with a run on two hits in the bottom of the sixth. Camp and Walton began the frame with consecutive singles. After moving up a base on a passed ball, Camp scored on a wild pitch.

Senior righty Brenna Klein">Brenna Klein (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) took the loss after giving up three runs in one-third of an inning. Sexton earned the win after striking out five batters over the final three and two-thirds innings.

In the nightcap, the Jaguars took advantage of three Le Moyne errors in the second inning to score the only runs they would need. Thornton reached on an error by the second baseman to open the inning and then stole second. Following a pop out, Thornton moved to third on a ground out and raced home on a throwing error by the first baseman. After right fielder Lauren Yeargan walked, she advanced to third as Stephens reached on an error by the first baseman and scored just before Stephens was caught stealing.

Augusta State added an insurance run in the sixth inning on one hit. Jones walked with one out, moved to second on a single by Thornton and advanced to third on a walk by Vaughn to load the bases. Designated player Kaitlin Harris then drew a walk to force in Jones.

Harrison suffered the loss after giving up just two hits and yielding only one earned run, while striking out three batters. Hughes earned the win after recording three strikeouts and allowing just three hits.

Le Moyne (3-7) wraps up its 12-game "Spring Break" trip with a doubleheader at Erskine on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
