HARRISON, EDMONDSON AND KERMIDAS LEAD SOFTBALL TO SWEEP OF SAINT ANSELM, 5-4, 7-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) drove in the tying run and scored the winning run in the opener and sophomore southpaw Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) retired the first 19 batters of the nightcap as the Le Moyne College softball team swept Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.

Saint Anselm opened the scoring in the first game as baseman Olivia Story blasted a solo home run to center field with two outs in the second inning.

The Dolphins responded with a run on one hit and a Saint Anselm error in the bottom of the second. Freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) reached second base with one out as the right fielder dropped a fly ball. Two batters later, sophomore center fielder Hannah Gatley (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell) singled up the middle to drive in Capuano.

The Hawks regained the lead in the fourth inning with three runs on two hits and two Le Moyne errors. Right fielder Kristen Peffer reached on bunt single to open the frame. Third baseman Hannah Byrne then reached on a throwing error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt and moved to third on a fielding error by the right fielder, which allowed Peffer to score. After an out, Story drilled a two-run homer over the fence in left center.

Le Moyne got two of the runs back on four hits in the bottom of the inning. After Capuano singled with one out, junior right fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) doubled to left center to knock in Capuano. Gatley then singled to right to plate Kermidas.

The Dolphins took the lead in the fifth inning with two runs on two hits. Senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) led off with a single to center and came around to score on a double to right center by senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City). Following a pair of outs, Edmondson raced home from third on a wild pitch for the eventual winning run.

Sophomore Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled) earned the win in relief after striking out two in one and two-thirds innings, while allowing just one hit. Harrison picked up the save by retiring six of the eight batters she faced, including three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the first inning with a run on one hit. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) drew a walk on four pitches to open the frame and then stole second base. Shea followed with a single to right center to drive home Cashel.

Le Moyne doubled the lead in the second as Kermidas launched a solo home run to right to lead off the frame.

The Dolphins scored once on two hits in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Shea doubled to center with one out and scored from third on a two-out single to left by Gatley.

Le Moyne extended its lead to four in the fifth inning on one hit and a Saint Anselm error. Shea reached on a fielding error by the shortstop with two outs and came around to score on a double to left center by Edmondson.

The Dolphins finished off their scoring with three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. After Harrison led off with a single to the shortstop, Kermidas blasted a home run to center field. Senior pinch-hitter Amanda Mosich (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) followed with a home run to left field.

Harrison retired the first 19 batters of the game en route to earning her 17th win of the season, while striking out 13 batters. Her perfect game bid was broken up on a single by center Monique Gauthier to the left side of the infield with one out in the seventh inning. Shea and Kermidas each had two of Le Moyne's 10 hits. Shannon Dalton took the loss after giving up seven runs (six earned) over five innings of work.
