SOFTBALL EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO EIGHT WITH SWEEP OF SAINT ROSE, 7-2, 12-2

Albany, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) struck out 18 batters and senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) doubled four times and drove in six runs to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon at Haker Field. The Dolphins won the first game, 7-2, and registered a 12-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Dolphins, who clinched a spot in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships, started the opening game's scoring with a run on two hits in the first inning. After senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) walked with one out, Edmondson doubled for the first time to left center to plate Shea.

Le Moyne added a run on two hits in the second inning. Junior right fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) led off the frame with a single through the right side, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Harrison and moved to third on a wild pitch. After senior left fielder Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) walked and stole second, senior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) singled up the middle to drive in Kermidas.

The Dolphins doubled their lead in the fifth inning with two runs on three hits. After Shea led off with a double to left center, Edmondson also doubled to left center to knock in Shea. Following an out and a single by freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), Kermidas lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Edmondson.

Le Moyne pushed its advantage to five in the sixth as Shea doubled to left center with two outs to score Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek), who singled through the left side one batter earlier and then stole second.

Saint Rose got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning with two unearned runs on two hits and two Le Moyne errors. Pinch-hitter Anna Carey led off the inning by reaching on a dropped pop fly. After left fielder Val Nelson reached on a fielder's choice in which catcher Brittany Banks was thrown out at second and center field Amber Loussedes singled to center, right fielder Steph Luce grounded out to Capuano to drive in Nelson. Designated player Olivia Reeves then singled through the left side to knock in Loussedes.

The Dolphins finished off the scoring in the contest with two runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Capuano singled to the shortstop with one out and then came around to score on a double by Kermidas. Harrison then singled up the middle to knock in Kermidas.

Harrison, the reigning Northeast-10 pitcher of the week, struck out 11 batters in the game, the fourth time this season she's recorded double-digit strikeouts, while yielding two unearned runs on four hits. Edmondson finished the game with three hits (two doubles), while Shea (both doubles), Capuano, Kermidas, Harrison and Ford each had two hits. Courtney Galuski suffered the loss after giving up four runs on nine hits over four innings in the circle.

After not scoring in the first inning of the nightcap, the Dolphins scored in every other inning, starting with a pair of runs on one hit in the second inning. Capuano led off with a single down the right field line and then stole second. After an out and a walk by Harrison, Capuano stole third with Harrison moving up to second on the throw. A wild pitch then allowed Capuano to score and Harrison to advance to third. Brown followed by driving in Harrison with a sac fly to center.

Le Moyne scored twice on four hits in the top of the third inning. Cashel opened the frame with a single and then stole second and third. After an out, Edmondson doubled to plate Cashel. Following a single by junior designated player Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), Capuano singled to knock in Edmondson.

The Dolphins took a 5-0 lead in the fourth on a pair of hits. Ford singled down the right field line to open the inning, Cashel followed with a single to left center and then Shea drew a walk to load the bases and force a Saint Rose pitching change. Galuski unleashed a wild pitch to Edmondson, allowing Ford to score.

In the fifth, Kermidas led off with a triple to right field and then raced home on a ground out by Harrison.

Shea opened the sixth by reaching on an error by the pitcher. Two batters later, Kiernan doubled to left field to score Shea.

First baseman Rachel Reed homered to center with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to get the Golden Knights on the scoreboard.

Le Moyne answered with five runs on four hits in the top of the seventh inning. Harrison led off with a single and was replaced at first by sophomore Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland). After Batson stole second, she scored on a triple to right center by Brown. After another Saint Rose pitching change, Brown scored on a wild pitch. Following back-to-back walks by Ford and Cashel and a single up the middle by Shea to load the bases, Edmondson doubled to right center to drive in her three classmates.

The Golden Knights completed the scoring in the game with a run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shortstop Marisa Bird led off with a single and moved to second with one out as pinch-hitter Alexis Williams was hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout, Luce singled to center to drive in Bird.

Harrison, who struck out seven batters, picked up her 21st victory of the season, tied for the 14th most in the country, while scattering six hits. Cashel, Edmondson, Kiernan, Capuano and Ford each recorded two of Le Moyne's 14 hits in the contest. Sarah Arbogast took the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits and walks in three and one-third innings over two stints in the circle.

Le Moyne (23-23, 17-9 NE-10), which recorded at least seven runs in each half of a conference doubleheader for the first time this season, returns to action at Franklin Pierce on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
