SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT SAINT MICHAEL'S, 0-1, 6-0

Colchester, Vt. – Junior designated player Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a doubleheader split with Saint Michael's on Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights won the opening game, 1-0, while the Dolphins took the nightcap, 6-0.

In the first game, the Purple Knights scored the only run on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Second baseman Amanda Brigante led off with a single to third base and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Bethany Falls then doubled to left field to drive in Brigante.

Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss after giving up just the two fourth-inning hits, while striking out eight batters over six innings in the circle. Stephanie Frank earned the win by tossing seven scoreless innings, while yielding just three hits.

The Dolphins opened the scoring in the first inning of the nightcap with two runs on three hits. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) led off the game with a single to left field and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Cashel then raced home on a wild pitch. Senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with a single to left field and moved to second on an error by the left fielder. After an out, Shea scored on a single to left by Kiernan.

Le Moyne extended its lead with three runs on six hits and a Saint Michael's error in the third inning. After Shea singled and was thrown out trying to steal second, senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) singled to left field and advanced to third on another error by the left fielder. Kiernan then singled to left field to knock in Edmondson. Following singles by freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and junior right fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley), Harrison singled up the middle to drive in Capuano and Kermidas.

The Dolphins finished off the scoring in the game with a run on one hit in the fourth inning. After Cashel walked on five pitches with one out, Edmondson lined a triple to right center with two outs to plate Cashel.

Harrison earned her conference-leading 22nd victory of the season after allowing just three hits in recording her conference-best eighth shutout of the year. Shea, Edmondson and Kiernan each had two of Le Moyne's 10 hits. Frank took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits over three innings pitched.

Le Moyne (24-24, 18-10 NE-10), which lost for just the fourth time in 18 April games, closes out the regular season on Saturday at Franklin Pierce at 2:00 p.m.
