Rindge, N.H. – Senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) doubled three times, blasted two home runs and drove in six runs and sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) tossed 11 scoreless innings to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the FPU Softball Field. The Dolphins won the opening game, 10-3, and recorded an 8-1 victory in the nightcap.
After two scoreless innings in the opening game, the Dolphins exploded for nine runs on seven hits in the third inning. After senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) singled to open the frame and Shea followed with a double, senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) singled up the middle to drive in her two classmates. Following a hit batsman, junior right fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) smacked a three-run homer over the fence in right field. Following a Franklin Pierce pitching change, the Dolphins loaded the bases on a walk by Harrison, a single by senior left fielder Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) and a single by Cashel around a pair of outs. Shea then drilled a grand slam over the wall in left field.
Le Moyne added a run in the top of the fifth inning as senior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) connected on her 18th career home run, the sixth-most in the program's history.
The Ravens scored three runs on three hits and a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs, right fielder Nicole Pratt singled to the left side of the infield and then stole second. After left fielder Alyssa Dolson walked and the two base-runners moved up on a passed ball, first baseman Alicia Dean singled to center to drive in Pratt, while moving to second on the throw. Second baseman Megan Bird then singled through the left side to knock in Dolson. Designated player Jessica Furtado then struck out, but reached on an error by the catcher, which allowed Dean to score.
Harrison earned her 23rd win of the season after striking out nine batters over four scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit and one walk. Cashel finished the game with four hits, while Shea and freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) had two hits apiece. Rachel Allen took the loss for the Ravens after giving up five runs on six hits over two innings of work.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored twice on two hits and a Franklin Pierce error in the second inning. Kermidas led off with a single down the first base line and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Capuano. Two batters later, Brown doubled to left field to drive in Kermidas and then scored on a throwing error by the first baseman.
Franklin Pierce got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with an unearned run on two hits. Center fielder Jayme Bilafer doubled to left center with one out and moved to third as Dean reached on an error with two outs. Designated player Jaime Verner followed with a single to left field to plate Bilafer.
Le Moyne pushed its lead to 4-1 with two runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Following a one-out single back to the pitcher by Cashel, Shea launched her fourth home run of the season over the fence in left field. The four home runs tie her with Cashel and Kermidas for the team lead.
In the sixth, Kermidas led off by drawing a walk, stole second and then moved to third on a ground out. Brown followed with a single to center to drive in Kermidas.
The Dolphins finished off the day's scoring with three runs on three hits and a Franklin Pierce error in the seventh inning. Edmondson singled to right with two outs and moved to second as sophomore center fielder Hannah Gatley (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell) drew a walk. Kermidas followed with a single to center to knock in Edmondson. Capuano then singled to drive in Gatley, while Kermidas scored on an error by the first baseman.
Harrison earned her conference-best 24th win of the season after striking out six batters in tossing her league-high 31st complete game. With the six strikeouts, Harrison extends her single-season program record and moves up to fourth in the country with 277. Shea recorded three hits, while Kermidas, Capuano and Brown each added a pair. Jessica Colson was handed the loss after giving up two runs on four hits over three innings pitched.
