New Haven, Conn. – Junior righty Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) struck out seven batters to lead the 11th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a 2-1 win over Southern Connecticut State on Thursday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division play at The Ballpark at SCSU.
The Owls got their only run of the game on a lead-off home run to left field by first baseman Ryan Geffert in the second inning.
Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece on one hit in the fifth inning. Redshirt junior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) led off the frame with a double down the left field line. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt moved him to third base, Ciraco scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by junior catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley).
The Dolphins plated the winning run on two hits in the sixth inning. Senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) opened the frame with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) followed with a single to right field to drive in Botsford.
Cannon allowed just three hits in his seven-inning performance to improve to 6-0 on the season. After senior Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) tossed a perfect eighth inning, junior closer Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) worked around a lead-off walk to earn his seventh save of the season, the second-best total in the conference.
Le Moyne (30-10-1, 15-6-1 NE-10, 10-4 SW), which has won each of its four Southwest Division series it has completed, returns to the diamond on Saturday against Southwest Division-leading Pace at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the seven members of the senior class will be honored for their contributions to the program.
