New Haven, Conn. – Championship Most Valuable Player Jennifer Lowrey registered 26 strikeouts to lead Assumption College to the Northeast-10 Conference Softball Championship with a pair of wins over Le Moyne College on Sunday at Southern Connecticut State's Pelz Field. The Greyhounds won the first game, 9-1, in five innings and were victorious in the decisive second game, 2-1. The Greyhounds had to beat Le Moyne twice to win the title since the Dolphins entered the day as the Championship's only undefeated team.
The Dolphins struck for the first run of the day in the opening game's first inning. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) led off the game with a solo home run down the left field line.
Assumption took the lead in the third inning with three runs on two hits. After catcher Andrea Crowley singled to center and center fielder Tanya Robidoux walked around a line out, left fielder Melissa Jalbert blasted her ninth home run of the year to center field.
The Greyhounds blew the game open with six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shortstop Marissa Palumbo struck out to open the inning, but reached first on a wild pitch. After first baseman Ashley Impagliazzo reached on a bunt single to move Palumbo to second, designated player Paige Licata singled to right center to drive in Palumbo. Following a single by Robidoux down the right field line to load the bases and a strikeout by Jalbert, second baseman Lauren Medeiros singled through the right side to knock in Impagliazzo, while Licata scored on a fielding error by the right fielder. Right fielder Nikki Boris then drilled a three-run homer, her seventh of the season, over the fence in left field.
Lowrey, the Northeast-10 Pitcher of the Year, earned the win in the circle after registering 13 strikeouts over five innings of work, while not allowing a Dolphin to reach base after the first inning. Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss after yielding nine runs over four innings pitched, while striking out eight batters.
The decisive second game started just like the opening game of the day as Cashel launched her team-best sixth home run over the fence in left center to lead off the bottom of the first inning.
The Greyhounds got the run back in the top of the second inning as Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year Jess DiPilato, Assumption's third baseman, recorded her seventh home run of the campaign.
Assumption plated the eventual winning run in the fifth inning on one hit and a Le Moyne error. Palumbo drew a walk to open the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Impagliazzo. On a single through the left side by Crowley, Palumbo advanced to third and then scored on a fielding error by the left fielder.
Lowrey recorded her 18th win of the year after striking out 13 batters over seven innings pitched, while allowing five hits. Harrison took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on just three hits, while striking out five Greyhounds to push her single-season record to 312.
Le Moyne finishes the year with a record of 29-26, which included a run of 14 wins in the 15 games leading up to Sunday.
