Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) struck out nine batters in tossing a pair of shutouts as the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of Adelphi on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins defeated the Panthers, 8-0, in six innings in the opener and registered a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the first game with four runs on four hits in the third inning. After senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) walked to open the frame, senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) blasted a home run down the right field line. Following an out, Harrison and freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) singled up the middle and junior right fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Senior left fielder Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) then doubled to left center to plate Harrison and Capuano.
Le Moyne added a run on two hits in the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) singled to left with one out and moved to second on a ground out. Edmondson then singled to right center to knock in Cashel.
In the sixth inning, the Dolphins scored three times on three hits to end the game due to the "mercy rule". Senior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) drew a walk to open the frame, Cashel followed with single up the middle and then Shea reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Edmondson then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Ford, while Cashel and Shea each moved up a base. Junior designated player Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) followed with a single to center to drive in Cashel. After Harrison was walked on four pitches to load the bases again, Capuano was hit by a pitch to force in Shea and end the game.
Harrison struck out two Panthers and allowed just four hits in picking up her 10th win of the year. Cashel registered three hits in the game, while Edmondson and Harrison had two hits apiece. Devon Kelly took the loss for Adelphi after giving up four runs on seven hits over two and two-thirds innings pitched.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need on two hits in the fourth inning. Edmondson led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kiernan. Harrison then singled down the left field line to drive in Edmondson.
Le Moyne added to its lead with two runs on two hits in the sixth inning. After Harrison led off with a single through the left side, Kermidas homered off the scoreboard in right center.
Harrison registered seven strikeouts en route to recording her conference-leading fifth shutout of the year. At the plate, Harrison had two of Le Moyne's six hits. Laurin Watts suffered the loss for the Panthers after allowing three runs on six hits over six innings pitched.
Le Moyne (12-20, 6-6 NE-10), which has won seven of its 10 home games, returns to the diamond on Thursday against Merrimack at 10:00 a.m.
