Waltham, Mass. – Senior shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) blasted a tie-breaking two-run homer to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a split of a doubleheader with Bentley on Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action. Bentley won the opening game, 6-5, while the Dolphins posted a 4-2 victory in game two.
The Falcons scored four runs on three hits in the first inning of the first game. After the first batter popped out, center fielder Jackie Gauthier, second baseman Laura McDonough and catcher Erica Thibodeau drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Third baseman Kelly Sanborn then tripled to center field to drive in the three base runners. After a walk by left fielder Megan Blier and a single by first baseman Samantha Tierney, pitcher Carly Taitz singled through the left side to drive in Blier.
The Dolphins got two of the runs back in the top of the second inning. Freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) led off the frame with an infield single and proceeded to move to second on a passed ball. After sophomore center fielder Hannah Gatley (New Port Richey, Fla./J.W. Mitchell) reached on an error, senior left fielder Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) singled to right to plate Capuano. Two batters later, senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) drove in Gatley as she reached on an error.
Bentley extended its lead to 5-2 in the third inning with a run on two outs. After a one-out single by Tierney, Taitz tripled to right center to knock in Tierney.
Le Moyne pulled within a run with two runs on three hits in the fifth inning. Senior catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) tripled to right center with one out and came in to score on a double to left center by junior designated player Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson). Two batters later, Capuano doubled to right center to knock in sophomore pinch-runner Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool).
The Dolphins tied the scoring in the sixth with a run on one hit and a Bentley error. Senior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) reached second on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder with one out. After an out, Shea singled to left center to drive in Ford.
Bentley won the game in the bottom of the seventh with a run on three hits. Blier walked with one out and advanced to second on a single to right by Tierney. After an out, right fielder Chelsea Tamuk singled to the right side of the infield to load the bases. Shortstop Shannon Connor then singled to the right side of the infield to drive in Blier with the game-winning run.
Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss after giving up one run in two and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen, while striking out seven batters. Capuano had three hits in the game, while Shea, Edmondson, Kiernan and Kermidas had two hits apiece. Caitlin Betz picked up the win in relief for the Falcons after striking out five in two and two-thirds innings, while allowing just an unearned run.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the second game as Edmondson launched a two-out home run over the fence in the first inning.
Bentley evened the score in the bottom of the inning on a pair of hits. Gauthier doubled with one out and moved to third on a single by McDonough. After an out, Gauthier scored as McDonough was caught stealing second.
Le Moyne regained the lead with two runs on two hits in the third inning. Brown led off the frame with a double through the left side. Following a pair of outs, Shea blasted her 11th career home run over the wall in left field.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning on two hits. After Brown tripled to right field with one out, Ford singled up the middle to plate Brown.
Gauthier led off the sixth inning with a homer to left to deliver the game's final score.
Harrison picked up the victory after striking out six in her conference-best 20t complete game of the season, while yielding two runs on eight hits. Betz took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits over four and two-thirds innings.
Le Moyne (15-21, 9-7), which had its four-game win streak snapped with the game one loss, returns to the diamond on Saturday at Stonehill at 11:00 a.m.
