Colchester, Vt. – Junior right fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) drove in three runs in the first game and senior southpaw Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) struck out a career-high 15 batters in the nightcap to lead the #12/18 Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 7-2, and registered an 8-1 win in the nightcap.
The Dolphins started the game's scoring with a run on one hit in the first inning of game one. Senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) drew a walk on five pitches to start the game, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left by Wiley.
In the second inning, Le Moyne added to its lead with a run on two hits. Senior catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled through the left side with two outs and moved to second on a single by junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College). After a walk by Botsford to load the bases, Wiley was hit by a pitch to force in Kalaka.
The Purple Knights got on the scoreboard with a run on one hit and two Le Moyne errors in the third inning. Left fielder Nicky Elderton reached on a fielding error by the shortstop with one out. After a strikeout and a throwing error that moved Elderton to second, right fielder Corey Livingston singled to left field to drive in Elderton.
The Dolphins regained their two-run lead in the top of the fifth with a run on one hit. Botsford led off with a single to the third baseman, Wiley was then hit by another pitch and senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After an out, senior designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to knock in Botsford.
Saint Michael's closed within a run in the bottom of the sixth with a run on one hit and one Le Moyne error. Catcher Jason Moore singled to center with one out and moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher as shortstop Don McGuirl reached on a fielder's choice. After center fielder Tim McDonnell walked to load the bases and a Le Moyne pitching change, second baseman Tyler Wild reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Moore to cross the plate.
Le Moyne tallied four runs on four hits and a Saint Michael's error in the eighth inning to put the game away. Ciraco led off the frame with a single up the middle and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. After junior first baseman Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) walked with one out and stole second, Kalaka singled up the middle to drive in Ciraco and Stinson. Following a walk by Redmond, Botsford singled through the right side to knock in Kalaka. Wiley then singled through the left side to score Redmond with the game's final run.
Junior right-hander Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) picked up the win to improve to 6-0 on the year after striking out three over five and one-third innings, while yielding two unearned runs on five hits. Senior righty Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) tossed three and two-thirds scoreless innings for his second save. Botsford, Wiley and Kalaka each had two hits in the win. Andrew Kelley suffered the loss for the Purple Knights after giving up three runs on four hits over six innings of work.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with two runs on two hits in the third inning of the nightcap. Marra singled through the left side with one out and then stole second with two outs. Sophomore left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Syracuse) followed with a single to center to knock in Marra. After Wiese stole second and third, he scored on a wild pitch.
Le Moyne extended its lead to three in the fourth with a run on one hit and a Saint Michael's error. Sophomore designated hitter Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) walked to open the frame and moved to second on a ground out. Botsford then singled to center to plate Reynolds.
The Dolphins added a run in the fifth inning on one out. Wiese walked on five pitches to begin the inning, stole second and raced home on a double to left by Stinson.
Le Moyne pushed its advantage to 6-0 with two runs on three hits and an error in the seventh inning. Wiese singled to left center, stole second and moved to third as Stinson reached on an error. Junior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) followed with a single to left to plate Wiese and move Stinson to third. Reynolds then singled to right field to drive in Stinson and force a Saint Michael's pitching change.
The Dolphins finished off their scoring for the day with two runs on two hits in the ninth inning. Speicher led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a walk by Reynolds. After an out and a single by Botsford through the left side to load the bases, Speicher scored on a wild pitch. Wiley then recorded a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in Reynolds.
The Purple Knights scored their lone run of the nightcap in the bottom of the ninth inning on two hits and two Le Moyne errors. McDonnell reached on a throwing error by the shortstop with one out and moved to second on a single by Wild. On a single up the middle by first baseman Alec Tice, McDonnell scored on a fielding error by the center fielder.
Kuzma recorded his second win of the campaign after giving up just an unearned run on only four hits in a complete-game performance, while striking out 15 batters. The 15 strikeouts are the most by Le Moyne pitcher since Bobby Blevins '07 registered 15 in a 3-0 win over Saint Peter's on April 21, 2007. Botsford, Wiese and Speicher each finished the game with a pair of hits, while Wiese scored three times. Wiese's four stolen bases tie a program record set by Eddie Harper '03 in a win over Saint Peter's on May 13, 2000. Collin Fishman took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits over four innings.
Le Moyne (23-6-1, 8-2-1 NE-10, 3-2 SW), which improved to 12-2 in road games, returns to action on Monday at Saint Anselm at 1:00 p.m.
