Box Score Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) led five Dolphins in double figures as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team registered an 83-67 victory over Mansfield University on Saturday evening at Ted Grant Court.
Marple led all scorers in the game with a career high-tying 21 points, 12 of which came in the first half, while adding four rebounds (three offensive) and two steals. Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) recorded 15 points (13 in the second half), grabbed eight rebounds and posted a career best-tying five steals. Senior guard Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) tallied a career-high 14 points after recording a then career best-tying 13 in each of the first two games of the year. Sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) posted 12 points and six rebounds, while junior guard Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) registered 10 points and four rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench. Graduate student guard Kayla Stroman">Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) dished out 12 assists, tied for the second-most in the program's history and one off the program record, and posted six steals, the second-most by a Dolphins in the last nine seasons.
Katie Fitzpatrick led Mansfield with 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Megan McSwain recorded 15 points, while Jena Matter and Alyssa DeRichie each had 12 points and four assists.
Mansfield opened the game by making its first three shots to jump out to a 7-2 lead 1:56 into the contest. DeRichie buried a three-pointer, Fitzpatrick followed with a lay-up and then Matter converted a lay-up.
Le Moyne, which has won 22 of the 23 games in the series, including 16 straight meetings, answered back with a 20-6 run to take a 22-13 lead with 11:55 remaining. McKnight tallied seven points in the stretch, Hahesy nailed a pair of three-pointers, Marple scored five points and Brown made a lay-up.
After Matter made a lay-up, the Dolphins posted a pair of 5-0 spurts around another Matter lay-up. Marple had all five points in the first spurt on a three-pointer and two free throws, while McKnight drilled a three-pointer off a feed from Greer, who then converted a fast-break lay-up off a steal in the second spurt.
Following alternating lay-ups that made the score 34-19 with 6:35 to go, the Mounties ran off nine straight points over a span of 1:36 to trim their deficit to six. Fitzpatrick had five of the points, while Katie Yale had the other four.
The Dolphins, who have scored at least 82 points in back-to-back games for the first time since the opening two games of the 2000-01 season, countered with seven straight points from three players to push their lead back to double digits. After Mansfield got a pair of lay-ups from Matter, Brown hit a jumper with two seconds left in the half to give the Dolphins a 43-32 lead at the intermission.
After DeRichie nailed a three-pointer to pull Mansfield within nine (44-35), the Dolphins rattled off 11 straight points and 17 of the next 21 to take their largest lead of the game (61-39) with 13:14 remaining. Marple ignited the run with back-to-back jumpers, Greer followed with a three-pointer and two lay-ups, Marple made a lay-up off a feed from Stroman, who then converted a lay-up and Greer capped the jaunt with another lay-up.
Mansfield responded with seven consecutive points and 10 of the next 12 to pull within 14 with 10:18 left. Four Mounties accounted for the 10 points, including three each from McSwain and Fitzpatrick.
Over the last 10 minutes of the game, Le Moyne's lead bounced between 13 and 19 points, but it was at 15 or 17 for a majority of the time.
Le Moyne (3-0), which has won its first three games for the first time since the 2007-08 season, opens Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday at the University of New Haven at 5:30 p.m.
