WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SUFFERS FIRST HOME LOSS, 74-43, TO #2 GANNON

Syracuse, N.Y. – Nettie Blake registered a double-double to lead second-ranked Gannon University to a 74-43 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Junior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Covington) was the only Dolphin in double figure scoring with 10 points. Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) recorded eight points and five rebounds, while classmate Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) came off the bench to score six points and grab a team-best six rebounds.

Blake led the Golden Knights with 18 points (nine in each half) on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, while grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds, including seven in the second half. Kelly Sundberg recorded 12 points and dished out four assists.

The Golden Knights, who have been ranked second and received at least two first-place votes in all five USA TODAY Sports Top 25 Coaches' Polls this season, opened the game with the first 11 points over 2:44. Blake had the first five before Brittany Batts and Mollie Sebald nailed three-pointers from the left side.

After a span of 7:34, during which the Dolphins had a 4-2 advantage on baskets by Marple and McMahon, the Golden Knights scored six straight points to push their lead to 15 with 8:48 to go.

Following a pair of free throws by Marple with  6:06 left in the half that made the score 23-10, Gannon scored 13 consecutive points and 18 of the next 20 to take its largest lead of the half with 1:38 to go. Sundberg had the first three points and the last five points of the run, while Batts and Morgan Neighbors hit three-pointers and Sebald and Jen Papich converted shots.

Graduate student guard Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) made three free throws to deliver the halftime score of 41-15.

Gannon (9-0), which went 31-5 last year and advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to eventual National Champion Ashland University, opened the second half with 18 of the first 21 points to build its biggest lead of the game with 12:58 left. Blake had seven of the points, while four other Lady Knights also scored in the streak.

Gannon's lead bounced between 38 and 41 points over the ensuing eight minutes and 45 seconds. Greer had eight of Le Moyne's 15 points in the span, while Jennie Thies had five of Gannon's 14 points.

Le Moyne outscored the Lady Knights 10-1 over the final 3:49 to set the final margin. Freshman guard Caity Kuhnen (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) had the first five points on a lay-up and a three-pointer, while junior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) and sophomore guard Lauren Salzbrenner">Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) followed with two and three free throws, respectively.

Le Moyne (7-2, 6-2 East Region) returns to action on Tuesday against Wheeling Jesuit University at 7:00 p.m. The match-up, the first ever between the two programs, is the sixth of 46 scheduled women's contests this season between Jesuit institutions. The Dolphins are 1-13 all-time against Jesuit institutions (1-8 vs. Canisius, 0-5 vs. Scranton), with the lone win coming at home against Canisius during the 1987-88 season.
