SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 7-0 WIN OVER UMASS LOWELL

Salisbury, N.C. – Junior Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) tossed a six-hit shutout and senior center fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) had four hits to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 7-0 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon at the Catawba Invitational.

Following three scoreless innings to start the game, the Dolphins struck for two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Kermidas got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with a solo home run to center field. Sophomore right fielder Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) then reached on an error by the shortstop. Following an error by the first baseman, freshman left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) singled to center field to drive in Ostrander.

The Dolphins tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning. After Harrison reached on a fielder's choice and Kermidas singled, senior third baseman Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) flied out to move junior pinch-runner Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to third and Kermidas to second. Freshman second baseman Kirsten Trotta">Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) followed with a single to center field to knock in Tram and Kermidas.

Le Moyne completed the game's scoring with three runs in the seventh inning. After Harrison was hit by a pitch to open the frame and Kermidas singled, Kiernan blasted a three-run home run to left field.

Harrison struck out four batters in going the distance in the circle to earn the victory. Marielle Handley suffered the loss after yielding two runs (one earned) over four innings pitched.

Le Moyne (1-0) returns to action on Sunday with a pair of games at the Catawba Invitational. The Dolphins face Shippensburg at 11:00 a.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne at 1:00 p.m.
