SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT GEORGIAN COURT, 0-9, 6-3

Lakewood, N.J. – Freshman Trish Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) had a three-run double to break a 2-2 tie to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 6-3 win at Georgian Court University on Friday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at the GCU Softball Field. The Lions took the opener, 9-0, in five innings.

In the first inning of the opening game, Georgian Court scored eight runs on eight hits and two Le Moyne errors. Second baseman Justine Mattia singled up the middle with one out and advanced to third as shortstop Briana Molina singled to left center and took second on an error by the shortstop. Following a walk by catcher Meghan Sfraga to load the bases, first baseman Emma Erbig singled down the left field line to drive in Mattia and Molino. After a strike out, right fielder Vanessa Flores singled to right field to knock in Sfraga. Third baseman Ashlynn Thompson then singled to plate Erbig. Following a single by left fielder Alyssa Paradiso to load the bases, center fielder Dara Schroeder tripled to right field to clear the bases. Mattia closed out the scoring in the inning by driving in Schroeder with a single through the left side.

The Lions tacked on a run on one hit in the third inning. Paradiso tripled to right field with one out and raced home on a sacrifice fly to center by Schroeder.

Junior southpaw Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss after giving up nine runs (only two earned) on 10 hits over three innings in the circle. Deanna Daluise earned the win after tossing five scoreless innings, while allowing four hits.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first with two runs on two hits in the first inning. Sophomore catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) drew a walk to open the game and then moved to second on ground out. Harrison then singled to left center to plate Capuano. After freshman shortstop Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) singled and stole second base, senior third baseman Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Harrison.

The Lions evened the score at two apiece in the bottom of the second inning. Designated player Adriana Cortez singled to open the frame and was replaced at first base by pinch-runner Anabelle Barinas. After Flores reached on an error on a sac bunt attempt and Paradiso singled around a pop out to load the bases, Schroeder reached on an infield single to drive in Barinas. Flores then scored as Mattia reached on a fielder's choice.

Le Moyne regained the lead with three runs on three hits in the third inning. Senior center fielder Demetra Kermidas">Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) drew a walk to lead off the inning and then stole second. Harrison and Trotta then singled around a Georgian Court pitching change to load the bases. Following a pair of pop outs, Andrews doubled to left center to drive in Kermidas, Harrison and Trotta.

The Dolphins added a run in the sixth inning as Kermidas blasted a two-out, solo home run to right field after staying alive a the plate when the catcher dropped a foul ball.

Georgian Court pushed across one run on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the bottom of the seventh, but could not cut into its deficit any further. Paridiso led off with a bunt single and then moved to second on a sac bunt. After a pop out, Paradiso scored on an error by the right fielder on a single by Molino.

Harrison evened her record at 2-2 by striking out six in a complete-game performance, while yielding three runs (one earned) on nine hits. Illiana Teran took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and three walks over two-plus innings in the circle. Harrison recorded three hits and scored two runs, while Kermidas, Trotta and Kiernan had two hits each.

Le Moyne (2-3) returns to action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Dowling College at 1:00 p.m.
