Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Brookhaven, N.Y. – Erika Nogan tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener and shortstop Stephanie Tarango blasted a pair of home runs in the nightcap to lead Dowling College to a sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Golden Lions Field. The Golden Lions won the opener, 1-0, in eight innings, while posting a 12-8 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, junior pitcher Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) did not allow a Dowling hit until there was one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Golden Lions struck for the game's only run in the bottom of the eighth. After center fielder Amber Fogarty led off with a bunt single back to Harrison, third baseman Arianna La Puma doubled to left center to drive in Fogarty with the winning run.

Harrison was the tough-luck loser after yielding the one run on three hits over seven-plus innings, while striking out seven batters. Nogan earned the win after striking out six batters and allowing just four hits.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped out to a 7-0 lead through two innings. Sophomore catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) was hit by a pitch to start the game and then moved to second on a passed ball. After senior center fielder Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled up the middle and stole second, Harrison singled up the middle to drive in Capuano and Kermidas. Following a single through the left side by freshman shortstop Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupuis), senior third baseman Fran Kiernan (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) doubled to right field to plate Harrison. After freshman first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Trotta scored on an error as sophomore Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) reached on a fielder's choice. Two batters later, Allison Reynolds">Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) grounded out to drive in Kiernan with the fifth and final run of the inning.

The Dolphins extended their lead to seven as Trotta blasted a home run to center after Harrison singled up the middle with one out.

Dowling got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning with three runs on two hits. Fogarty drew a walk to open the inning and moved to second on a groundout. With two outs, designated player Melissa Perez singled up the middle to drive in Fogarty. Tarango then blasted a two-run homer to left field to force a Le Moyne pitching change.

The Golden Lions took the lead with six runs on three hits and one Le Moyne error in the fourth inning. Catcher Samantha Laird singled up the middle to open the frame and advanced to third as second baseman Erica Fischetti reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. A wild pitch then allowed Laird to score and Fischetti to take second. After a walk, another Le Moyne pitching change and a sacrifice bunt, La Puma lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Fischetti. Right fielder Marie Racano, who drew the walk, then scored on a balk. After left fielder Amber O'Malley drew a walk, Perez doubled to right field to knock in O'Malley. Tarango followed with another two-run homer to left field.

Dowling pushed its lead to 10-7 with a run on one hit in the fifth inning. Fischetti walked with one out and took second on a two-out walk by Fogarty. La Puma then singled to knock in Fischetti.

Le Moyne got the run back in the top of the sixth inning. Reynolds walked to open the frame and moved to second as Capuano reached on an error by the second baseman. After Kermidas singled up the middle to load the bases and force a Dowling pitching change, Harrison drew a walk to force in Reynolds. Michelle Andrews retired the next three batters to strand three runners and keep the Golden Lions in front.

Dowling finished off the game's scoring with two runs on two hits in the sixth inning. After Perez walked and Tarango doubled to right center, first baseman Jamie Laird doubled to left center to drive in pinch-runner Stephanie Ellwood and Tarango.

Harrison suffered the loss out of the bullpen after giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks over the final three innings. Kaitlin Ellingsworth earned the win after yielding an unearned run over three and two-thirds innings of relief, while Andrews earned a save by tossing the final two innings. Kermidas, Harrison and Trotta each had two hits to account for six of Le Moyne's seven hits. Tarango had four of Dowling's 10 hits, while La Puma and Perez each had two hits.

Le Moyne (2-5) closes out its three-day weekend trip back at Golden Lions Field for a doubleheader against Molloy College at 1:00 p.m.
